Ask me all the dam questions you want.

jangbones - 2017-02-13

the dam isn't going to fail because the spillway is busted, right?

The Mothership - 2017-02-13

No, the dam is not going to fail catastrophically, but it is in desperate need of repair nonetheless.

SolRo - 2017-02-13

could all or most of the water in the reservoir be released through erosion of emergency overflow and the hill it's built on?

The Mothership - 2017-02-14

No fucking way, there is too much water in the reservoir for it to be drained completely in the way that you describe, SolRo.

SolRo - 2017-02-14

But eh, the structure is made of dirt and clay. Wouldn't it just keep eroding lower and lower as long as there's enough water once the concrete cap fails?

188k evacuated yesterday from down river communities.

kingarthur - 2017-02-14

Can we chalk this up to America's crumbling infrastructure? I think we can.

chumbucket - 2017-02-14

Certainly can, and also the past decade or so of ignoring the need to improve it.

The Mothership - 2017-02-15

Oh definitely.

Old_Zircon - 2017-02-15

MY dad has commuted to work by train since 1980. During the Reagan years it used to break down constantly. After that it worked pretty consistently, he'd have trouble maybe 2 or 3 times a decade.

Last week he was on two different trains that broke down completely and one that was delayed because of some kind of track problem in I think 5 days.

Failing infrastructure is easily in my top three proof positive that America is fucked up.

Mister Yuck - 2017-02-14

Don't worry, this problem will be easily solved with a public-private partnership. We can just have Nestlé come in, bottle all the water, and ship it off somewhere to sell. To incentivize them, we'll buy back half the water and bury it, bottles and all, in the now empty reservoir. Then we can give the land away to a third company if they promise to clean up all the plastic bottles and redevelop area as a luxury housing subdivision (we won't actually make them clean up the plastic bottles though).

When someone responsible gets elected and tries to clean up the whole shitshow, we can delay them at every turn, blame all the expense and difficulty on them, and kick their ass in the next election.
