Mormonism has the same problem as Scientology, in that they quickly progress you to paying a hefty chunk of your earnings to be a member. That way, when down the line you develop doubts about the organization, you are then forced to reckon that you've spent a lot of money on this investment, and it's a huge waste to leave it.

The sunk-cost fallacy is alive and well.

You don't have to tithe (ten percent of your income) to be a member a member of the Mormon Church. but it is expected...and...you know I was going to say the church doesn't hold you back learning more if you don't but then I remembered you need to be up on your tithing for a temple card. You don't keep paying and learn more secret things though. Just the one time.

A year of tithing is required for a Temple Recommend, the requirement for the temple ceremonies.

Last summer I actually read the Book of Mormon and it seemed like bad self-insertion bible fan fiction. At least the bible has some interesting stories in it (don't get me started on Leviticus -- the whole thing is about giving food and wine to the priests every time you leave your hut). The Book of Mormon is all

Lamanite Man Lamanite Man
Lamanite Man hates Nephite Man
They have a fight
Lamanite wins
Lamanite Man

The two groups just take turns rejecting Christ and getting slaughtered or accepting Christ and doing the slaughtering.

I grew up mormon, went on a mission to south america, realized it was bullshit while there, then spent about 5 years as a full time amateur historian studying the side of mormonism they don't tell you in church. this video is the straight dope.

Hey man, another ex-mo here. My wife and I still get shit from her family, but it's so fucking nice to not have to put up with all the shit you had to in the church.

erratic - 2017-02-21

Yeah, man. Any time I feel down about anything, I just have to think "at least I don't have to do any church shit ever again" and feel a bit better

This is pretty good on detail. I've only retained, over many years, the detail that both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were both born in my home state.
