No. Jim is human garbage. Nothing can make me watch this.

I dunno what contents of video is but Nintendo and Miyamoto seem to regularly fuck over 3rd party developers. Stealing their ideas (even their code) and not paying them. Or getting them to commit to a big project then drop them half way through and not pay them. You can see why everyone is very hesitant to work with them and they end up making most of their own games.

StanleyPain - 2017-03-07

I'm not a huge fan of his (though I think he has improved greatly since leaving Escapist), but why do you say he is "human garbage?"

Xenocide - 2017-03-07

Sterling is pretty obnoxious, and frequently panders to the Nintendo Hatedom with videos like these, but I can't hate him simply because he's become very good at humiliating shitty Steam developers who resoundingly deserve it. The type who not only make bad games, but then try to intimidate, sue, or otherwise silence all their critics. At least Sterling sometimes uses his powers of douchebaggery for good.

Source or more info? I know of some stories that roughly correspond to this (Ikegami Tsushinki on Donkey Kong and Argonaut with Croc/Mario 64) but if that's what you're talking about then your version is hopelessly distorted, so I'm wondering if there's something else that I haven't heard about.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-03-07

@poorwill

There are a few good examples in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9GpCCZ6NAE

But they always seem to be doin stuff like that. They have an awful reputation.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-03-07

ps. Also the guy who made that video is like an acceptable version of alternate reality version of Jim. He's also a disgustingly fat petulant manchild. But he really knows his computer game lore in intricate detail + he does his research.

poorwill - 2017-03-07

Yeah, I'm familiar with that video. Most of it is bullshit or at least heavily distorted. The Star Fox 2 thing is all-out nonsense: it had EAD coders working on the game, and in any case the copyright was 100% owned by Nintendo - they can't steal what they own.
The Croc thing is highly dubious too. Croc was pitched as a Yoshi game - but was turned down. Mario 64 doesn't use any of the code, nor does it share any concept or design similarities beyond 'they're both 3D platformers'.
The 'Miyamoto hates Donkey Kong Country' thing was a bogus rumour, isn't actually an example of Miyamoto being an asshole (the man's allowed an opinion, and even he if did hate it he'd be right - they're completely by-the-numbers games). He *was* instructed by Nintendo higher-ups to make Yoshi's Island pre-rendered 3D after the success of DKC though (which he ignored completely).
After Croc/Star Fox 2 Nintendo has worked numerous times with Argonaut and Giles Goddard since then andMiyamoto attended Jez's (post-Croc) wedding. There's no bad blood there.
DMA, I don't know about. Miyamoto cancelled a few of their projects that never saw the light of day is all I know.

As a business, Nintendo has a history of some ruthless and sometimes outright illegal strongarm shit back in the 80s and the early-mid 90s, but that wasn't Miyamoto, that was Yamauchi. In more recent history their rep is more just having irritatingly opaque traditional Japanese business practices which makes them a chore to work with for 3rd parties - but I haven't heard of anything truly scummy in the past, say, decade or so. They don't have any high-profile (or even low-profile) stories of gutting developers, massive layoffs or anything like that - they're actually cleaner than any major publisher that I know of in that regard. They have one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry.

poorwill - 2017-03-07

A good effort at taking apart some of it: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=230245928&postcount=455

Miyamoto does have a rep as being pretty merciless when it comes to cancelling projects that aren't hitting targets/working out. And I've read stories about some truly arbitrary reasons given for rejecting ideas or some weird ideas he insisted on including.

StanleyPain - 2017-03-07

I'm still genuinely curious, though, Purple Cat, why Sterling is "human garbage?" What exactly is it he has done? I'm earnestly curious, this isn't a challenge or anything, I'm just curious if there's something maybe I am unaware of or something.

William Burns - 2017-03-07

Maybe he have PurpCat a bad review, ellipsis, in bed

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-03-07

@StanleyPain
So my reasons fall into two categories.

Superficial
* Hes a fat fuck
* He dresses like a fucking twat
* He has an annoying nasal voice

Substantive
* He concerns himself with the shittiest games he can dredge up
* Then he whines about them, in internet videos.
* As a "journalist" he puts in 0 effort, just finds some incredibly low hanging fruit.
* Hes an awful fleshy realisation of a 'gamer guy' stereotype whose association with my chosen medium horrifies me.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-03-07

Also @poorwill. Ok sounds like you know more about this than me.

When it comes to overzelous protection of IP, Nintendo is the new Disney. And Disney may actually be dialing back in this regard, too. When they nukem a Star Wars fangame, they said it was because of a Star Wars-related contract with another company and that they would have let it pass otherwise. And then there's the fact that when asked about the takedown of Live Action Toy Story, they actually reversed it. Looks like they finally found out about the Streisand Effect after all these years.

infinite zest - 2017-03-07

I didn't really watch this, but had it sort of on in the background so maybe he mentioned it, but pretty much all companies turn to some sort of resale site in lieu of labeling their software abandonware, which is also free, like GOG, so as long as they're still selling it, Fallout 1 is just as illegal as Witcher 3, etc. If he's just hammering in the point that Nintendo is VERY anti-piracy in an early '00s Metallica sort of way, well, that makes sense. I learned what "emulate" means thanks to NESticle, so Nintendo-at that time the only company whose consol games were still being produced during the birth of console emulation-had every right to be all like "stop being so up in my shit" but yeah, that was like 17 years ago.

infinite zest - 2017-03-07

(technically PSX was out too, but let's not count consoles whose games are only emulatable long after production of games has ceased)

cognitivedissonance - 2017-03-07

I happily paid Nintendo the $70 for the NES Classic, which I've loaded with roms and exploit cheerfully. They made a broken product that is very well made and looks nice. That's worth $70.

Nominal - 2017-03-07

His argument wasn't "the games are old and I deserve them for free".

It was "Nintendo screws other people by ignoring copyright law when it's convenient for them, so it's okay to screw them by ignoring copyright law when it favors you." Nintendo is notorious for throttling anything featuring their characters even when it clearly falls under fair use, and tries to get people to buy into their bullshit content program that gives them a fractions of the pennies they would otherwise get normally from their own content that clearly falls under fair use.

boner - 2017-03-07

For what it's worth, there was a commercially available Playstation 1 emulator being sold in the 90's, and Steve Jobs even showed it on stage.

infinite zest - 2017-03-07

Aw shit Bleemcast. Fucking ell. Ah I get it, so Nintendo's pretty much SloFlo Antonio guy but for gamin'? That's as far an analogy for this kinda stuff as I care to know. Guess I'd care more if I tried to make a business out of games like I used to, but I'm sure we would've been shut down for all sorts of shit we put out by 2004 or so anyway, so whatevs back to MAME32

boner - 2017-03-08

I was thinking of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connectix_Virtual_Game_Station

They even beat Sony in court, and Sony ended up buying them out just to take it off the market.

kingofthenothing - 2017-03-07

Alright, I can't take this dude seriously if that's how he's going to dress for his videos. He looks like he's trying to make people believe he's a jolly serial killer.

Cena_mark - 2017-03-08

It's just a gimmick.

Kid Fenris - 2017-03-07

You know what's weird? Hearing it said "S-NES." I always said either "Super NES" or "Super Nintendo."

StanleyPain - 2017-03-07

It seems to be a country-based thing. I've heard most people from the UK say "ESS-NES". Kind of like how tons of Australians say "SEE-GA" instead of SAY-GA because of some weird mispronunciation in an advertisement from decades ago that caught on there.
