Used to be into these guys long ago with a K-Tel Disco Mania album that had Ma Baker on it, a story-song about the legend of gangster Ma Barker, 'Don't anybody move, the money or your lives'.

It was different for disco music to have a message deeper than 'shake your bootie' so I liked it. Later I found the 45 single of Sunny by Boney, and dug that too.

Later on I found 'Ra Ra Rasputine', after radio stations started to play 'Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord' for Christmas, and more attention was on the band again I guess.

I like Boney M, by the book sound-wise, but still heavier than other groups like Abba, at least that's what I thought, but by now I've heard many groups that sound like them, it's Boney's lead singer that sets them apart, and their focus on Going Back West.

'Daddy Cool' has long been the flagship of my jogging playlist.

Also, two years ago my wife and I moved to a new city and were in that awkward phase of trying out absolutely anybody for an evening, trying to create a new social circle. One of the biggest duds was a Kiwi couple with whom we ended up watching video after video after video of Boney M concert performances (including this one). I guess that for them, Boney M was just "out there" enough to count as ironic and therefore hilarious. Nice folks, but that was to be our last friend date.

Christmas album is rock solid, by the way.

On a less awesome note, I just found out that the shirtless gentleman making his pecs dance is dead. :(
