I was going to clip some "further reading" highlights from the Wikipedia page but there were too many to choose from so I'll just post this, which sums it up nicely:
"Prison View Golf Course
Prison View Golf Course, a 6,000-yard (5,500 m), 9 hole, 72 par golf course, is located on the grounds of Angola.[48] Prison View, the only golf course on the property of an American prison,[83] is between the Tunica Hills and Camp J, at the intersection of B-Line Road and Camp J Road.[84] All individuals wishing to play are required to provide personal information 48 hours before their arrival, so the prison authorities can conduct background checks. Convicted felons and individuals on LSP visitation lists are not permitted to play on the golf course.[48] Current prisoners at LSP are not permitted to play on the golf course.[83]
The golf course, constructed on the site of a former bull pasture, opened in June 2004. Prisoners performed most of the work needed to construct the course. Prisoners that the LSP administration considers to be the most trustworthy are permitted to work at the golf course. Warden Burl Cain stated that he built the course so employees would be enticed to stay at Angola over weekends, to provide support in case of an emergency."

And before anyone bitches about it, yes I know some of the inmates on display are white and only about 95% of the audience is white, but I saw enough black guys getting gored by bulls while a couple thousand old white people in cowboy hats looked on and cheered that I feel the generalization is warranted. SolRo - 2017-03-31 Is dql actually not white? Sure does act like a white bigot a lot
Also not-white people can be racist. There are no restrictions
|
Old_Zircon - 2017-04-01 SolRo I'd go farther than that and say everyone is racist by default in the USA (at least, leaving aside vague speculation about "universal human nature" or whatever), it's our cultural heritage. It's whether you recognize the racism you've been condiioned with since birth, and where you go from there, that's important. But we were all born in to our society's particular mythology of race, by the time you're old enough to think critically bout that kind of thing it's already too late to avoid it.

memedumpster - 2017-04-01 Counterpoint : if aliens put an antimatter cannon to earth's head and said "have a critical thought or the earth gets it," we'd all be dead.
|
memedumpster - 2017-04-01 "Everyone is racist by default."
"Jews only look out for Jews."
"Black people have to be taught not to steal."
"Women just want sex, safety, and a credit card."
None of these things are different than the other.

I worked on a documentary on Angola about twenty years ago. We did everything the prison asked us to, except one thing; we interviewed a lifer there who was educated and became an advocate and legal advisor. His views on the labor that goes on there were enlightening.
And we covered the rodeo of course. Bulls are fucking scary as hell up close. Angry, enormous, murder machines. About ten feet from us, a penned bull kicked a wrangler outside his pen and snapped his leg like a twig.

M-DEEM - 2017-03-30
Are the brown people forced to do the rodeo? Are the black people watching the rodeo actually white people? Why does this look like just any regular-ass rodeo? Why am I still here?
|
SolRo - 2017-03-31 Is a white supremacist trying to defend this?
Yes
|
|
M-DEEM - 2017-03-31 If you say so! However you get your sadness fix is fine by me. You can pause this video just about anywhere and see a variety of ages and races in attendance. Or look at the preload. 5 for diversity!
When you catch your charge for illegal use of mace at a trump rally (because you're malnourished and never had to learn to fight) you can request angola and let the prisoners there know you want to shut down their rodeo because you got the vapors from a cbs sunday morning clip. They'll sure appreciate it.
I think you're the true racists because you don't think black and brown people know what they're doing. You don't think black and brown people can appreciate the feats of machismo and derring do on display here. Shame on you

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-01 It's actually a fair criticism of my description to point out that the rodeo is probably one of the least exploitative things the prison does, and apparently is generally viewed favorably by the inmates and at least according to the standard narrative it had a relatively egalitarian origin and was historically a private event organized cooperatively by guards and inmates, for what that's worth.
It's also worth noting that a good portion of the half million dollars it brings in every year is put straight in to Baptist re-education programs, in clear (but common) violation of the constitutional separation of church and state.
Also, it's worth noting what it's "one of the least exploitative" relative to, for example here's another one of Angola's programs that was cooperatively organized by inmates and guards:
"Sexual slavery
A 2010 memoir by Wilbert Rideau, an inmate at Angola from 1961 through 2000, states that "slavery was commonplace in Angola with perhaps a quarter of the population in bondage" throughout the 1960s and early 1970s.[136] The New York Times states that weak inmates served as slaves who were raped, gang-raped, and traded and sold like cattle. Rideau stated that "The slave's only way out was to commit suicide, escape or kill his master."[136] Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox, members of the Angola 3, arrived at Angola in the late 1960s and became active members of the prison's chapter of the Black Panther Party, where they organized petitions and hunger strikes to protest conditions at the prison and helped new inmates protect themselves from rape and enslavement.[137] C. Murray Henderson, one of the wardens brought in to clean up the prison, states in one of his memoirs that the systemic sexual slavery was sanctioned and facilitated by the officers.[138][page needed]"
