Spoilers, "The Venture Bros" needed to do this with the GCI and/or the OSI when they started being a drag on the action rather than a source of fun. I wonder if Roiland / Harmon had TVB in mind and were deliberately trying to avoid their mistakes.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2017-04-03

Not waiting six years netween episodes helps too. I don't remember the Venture Bros ever not being enjoyable while physically watching it, but man, I have no idea what the plot is anymore.

Bort - 2017-04-03

All those episodes where the Monarch was barred from arching Dr. Venture by the GCI ... ? The proper conclusion to all that should have been the Monarch somehow bringing the GCI down, and unleashing chaos. Instead we got episodes that resolved themselves with Dr. Mrs. Monarch reading rules out of the GCI guidebook.

Also, the show got too much up its own butt with backstory. Now, I like some backstory as much as the next guy; but by the time we discover that Dr. Billy Quizboy's mother used to be OSI, the show has officially given up on moving forward.

Too much emphasis on homage and parody as well. I realize that's a strange thing to complain about with a show that is essentially Johnny Quest Meets The Hardy Boys, but JQ / HB is simply a starting place, and it doesn't require adhering to either the JQ or HB model.

I want to like VB when it comes out again, eventually, but the show's got to meet me halfway. More manic energy from the first two seasons, less shying away from fun because the VB world is constructed in such an orderly way that there's no more room for chaos.

9 more seasons, spread over 97 years. Sounds about right.

Yeah, Venture Bros. was a complete quagmire from the season 2 finale onward. It forgot to mimic its source material structurally, so we got a soap opera anime with a coat of Johnny Quest paint rather than a fun adventure serial.

At some point Venture Bros became its own wikipedia article.

Maggot Brain - 2017-04-03

Venture Bros has needed to end several times already but they can't leave well-enough alone.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-04-03

I like the idea of Rick as a demented god of chaos.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2017-04-03

Friendly reminder that Rick and Morty was originally submitted to PoETV as a "wow look at this shitty cartoon, Dan Harmon really jumped the shark" exhibit, until the show found widespread acclaim, at which point everyone pretended they liked it all along.

Someone in there actually said "Community really ruined Dan Harmon" and it's so unbelievably close to self-parody I couldn't let it go unnoticed.

boner - 2017-04-03

Maybe I'm jealous that this guy found success with his cartoon of Doc Brown tricking Marty McFly into giving him blowjobs?

Bort - 2017-04-03

SDC - was that the clip where Rick and Morty were flying around in the saucer and Rick was going to blow up the world, and eventually he falls asleep in a drunken stupor? Let's be fair, it didn't really do the show justice.

boner - those blowjobs worked, didn't they? That's just how science works in their universe. MOST universes, I would guess.

SolRo - 2017-04-03

I didn't like the shorts.

I liked the polished network product from episode 1

Nominal - 2017-04-03

The shorts are such a wildly different animal from the show that it takes some real pedantic bitterness to throw yourself to the "poetv hates what's cool" crusade.

...oh, it's SDC. Carry on then.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-04-03

My comment history will completely validate me!!

I have always maintained that R&M is good but not a patch on the crazy shit on Roiland TV.

Before, I didnt like the drama element of the show.
That has been lessened but now I feel the show is too plotty and logical.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-04-03

ps. the above stuff I dont like just isnt funny.
Random shit like 'house of Cosbys', thats funny!
R&M has some of that but Roiland TV is 100% that.

15th - 2017-04-04

I've always maintained that this show sucks. The voice acting is beyond annoying and the animation is hideous. I never understood why it's so well regarded. Community was also a huge pile of shit.

Love me.

infinite zest - 2017-04-05

First time I saw R&M I didn't like it. I had no idea who Dan Harmon was, and besides some pretty unique dialog, looked like it was going to play out like some adult Calvin and Hobbes or something. In a lot of ways it was like the first episode of Black Mirror. It wasn't bad, but it's kind of weird to introduce a show poised to reshape its respective genre with an episode so stuck inside a mold. But I'm glad I stuck with it

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-04-03

I like the pretty much total descent into insanity in the last minute of this episode. It's a reminder that Rick is barely human and Morty is bound to be miserable, even if he tries to kill his own grandfather, Rick will never die and he will never win.

It's just so many levels of awesome. They literally could have spent an entire season with Earth being a galactic colony and Jerry has a job, but they just blew so much shit up it's amazing. I'm in awe.

Bort - 2017-04-05

Was watching some Peter Capaldi "Doctor Who" the other day, and it occurred to me that Capaldi's Doctor is basically a Rick from the "booooo-ring!" end of the spectrum of Ricks. I'm sure there's fanfiction covering it, and no, I'm not going to look.
