This was probably the only good thing about this weaponized nostalgic crap

Gmork - 2017-04-10

Sucks to be you.

Doc Victor - 2017-04-10

Not really

Sexy Duck Cop - 2017-04-11

You know, I was going to IRONICALLY make a generic "I'm too good for this show, which is for dunb babies" post because it's such a cliche around here for people to be needlessly contrarian about popular TV shows, but then yep.

infinite zest - 2017-04-12

If you liked Donnie Darko 16 years ago then you probably like Stranger Things. I did and I do.

fedex - 2017-04-10

isn't that supposed to say Stephen King?

Yeah

infinite zest - 2017-04-10

But that type's kind of synonymous with other things too, like The Godfather's cover, lots of Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum et al. But regardless the folks who make the show say it's a direct rip of King's font (Portrait I think?) and I won't deny that it fits in. The scratches are bothersome but they're not in the show, just in this intro.

Maggot Brain - 2017-04-10

Best thing about this show; When ever a strange thing happens they play this song. It's like a laugh track but with synths.

Born in the RSR - 2017-04-10

This show was good and made me feel good.

Nikon - 2017-04-10

I loved it. The nostalgia hits kept on coming.

Born in the RSR - 2017-04-10

I'm too young and too Romanian to feel nostalgia for anything in this. I think the show doesn't get enough credit for being good regardless of nostalgia factors.

infinite zest - 2017-04-10

Yeah I just sort of watched it like it was some film student in the 80s' final thesis. They go out of their way to have 11 behave exactly the opposite of ET or "Mac", preferring Eggos to candy or greasy fast food and deciding the best way through an obstacle is, well, to go "through it" as opposed to "over it." This is Dark Star, not Star Wars, and Stranger Things makes that abundantly clear right down to this cool Carpenterian jingle. :)

Nikon - 2017-04-10

@Born Quite so. Even if one is not familiar with the things that are being referenced, it's a good story on its own.

Louddetective - 2017-04-10

Same! I'm a late-80s baby so I wasn't around for most of the nostalgia stuff, but damn, it was good. And as a huge fan of Carpenter, both films and music, it hit all the right spots.

Doc Victor - 2017-04-11

Okay, I thought it was crap. I think it was designed for mass market appeal and really could have been much better. It was made in what I saw as a very calculated way, deliberately yanking the heart strings people were going to prostrate themselves over. I didn't think the story was very original, believable (in the context of space monster movies), compelling, or well acted, aside from the toothless kid who was great. The production design was also pretty half assed and I don't think the Hollywood shitheels who made this thing cared much about anything except making money. This is basically on a level with Michael Bays transformers except that at least you can say that had the self awareness to admit it was Michael Bays transformers. It disappoints me to see a well budgeted sci fi show go the way of the lowest common denominator despite having at least some potential. It took no risks and delivered very little return, so I can't in good faith really say I thought it was worth a shit. Hope that explains my position a little better.

Read everything you wrote, DV. Just reread it. Say everything out loud, slowly.

Do it a few times.

Let us know if it starts to sound like the ultimate hipster rant.

Doc Victor - 2017-04-11

Not exactly amigo

memedumpster - 2017-04-11

I liked Stranger Things and had a great time watching it. Also, Doc Victor totally nails the "Stephen King genre."

betamaxed - 2017-04-11

I like that it used influences to make its own story rather than just be a shitty remake / soft reboot of some other franchise. That's how it should be done.

Species - 2017-05-25

fucking love this show.
