And here I thought I was the only one who hated it.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-15

It's hateable on so many levels.

Cena_mark - 2017-04-15

You Trumpanzees only hate it because the cast called out Mike Pence.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-04-16

You know, the word "tacky" comes to mind. George Washington did not breakdance. He held slaves. It's that "Springtime for Hitler" quality that makes me queasy. Rich white liberals just eat it up though, I have a friend that paid something like 500 beans a ticket for this monstrosity.

somedongus - 2017-04-15

Mo Rocca is supposed to be a 'serious' journalist now? Or are his pained smiles throughout a subtle sign of his disdain for the subject? Or BOTH?

Jeriko-1 - 2017-04-15

For all I know it's good but at 2000+ USD a ticket the intended audience certainly isn't me. I really wish modern theatre wasn't so... The word? Exclusive?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-04-15

Hamilton is what stupid people who think they're smart rave about being so great.

At least, that's been the case every single time I've encountered someone raving about it.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-15

So it's the TED Talks of Broadway?

Born in the RSR - 2017-04-15

is it just me or is this Miranda guy a better composer than he is a performer?

infinite zest - 2017-04-17

I dunno, In The Heights was ok in that in was an inner-city musical that didn't rip off Shakespeare or Puccini, but it still wasn't very good.

Maggot Brain - 2017-04-15

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-04-15

I wish I hadn't wasted my stars. They were meant for you.

Zoot42 - 2017-04-15

Hamilton is awesome. You are all contrarians who cant have fun.

Xenocide - 2017-04-15

They yelled at Mike Pence so now half the internet feels obligated to pretend this musical is bad.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-04-15

Different strokes. I think it's cringe inducingly bad.

And I have nothing against the cast. Their causing Trump retards to get their panties in a bunch gets brownie points from me. It doesn't make their production suck any less though.

Scrimmjob - 2017-04-15

Call me uncultured, but I think I'd rather end it all than sit through a hip hop musical about the founding fathers.

BHWW - 2017-04-15

It's an expensively staged seventh grade American History skit and has become the darling of our media and political 'elites' that crosses various lines. But it does utilize "hip-hop", such a daring choice to use an edgy, out-there, up and coming sub-genre with only nearly four decades of mainstream exposure.

BHWW - 2017-04-15

I have nothing against hip-hop, mind you but people are acting like it's so 'novel' and 'daring' to set a musical about one of the Founding Fathers to it that it almost makes me annoyed.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-04-16

OH MY! People on POE hating on something that's popular? How shocking and unexpected! How will I ever account for such an anomaly?

I've never heard a word of Hamilton, so I'm not going to defend it, but I like what I've seen of Lin-Manuel Miranda quite a bit.

BHWW - 2017-04-16

Sure, people are "hating on" Hamilton just because it's popular, you shambling mediocrity.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-04-16

I don't know if it's good or bad, but I sure as hell knew that you were going to hate on it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-04-16

And please don't pick on my shambling! So I have an old volleyball injury, so what?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-04-16

>>>I have nothing against hip-hop, mind you but people are acting like it's so 'novel' and 'daring' to set a musical about one of the Founding Fathers to it that it almost makes me annoyed.

It's not groundbreaking, but it is counterintuitive, and it risks spectacular failure. A hip-hop musical about a US founding father isn't a guaranteed success, and if it bombs, it's going to bomb Nagasaki-style. I think there's an audacity there you're failing to acknowledge, provided that it suceeds... not in being new, but in being good. If you're saying that it doesn't, yours is the minority opinion, which doesn't make it wrong, of course.

I think it's time for me to sniff out some clips.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2017-04-15

It's no CATS that's for sure.

Xenocide - 2017-04-15

Cats bugs the hell out of me. "Watch as we introduce this cast of unique and crazy characters!"

"Oh neat and now what are you going to do with them."

"NOTHING! Good night!"

BHWW - 2017-04-15

Watching and listening to clips from Hamilton makes me feel like I'm back in high school, at a presentation in the school auditorium where a motivational speaking group has put on a little "rap" about how doing drugs or smoking cigarettes is for fools and if you do it, then you're uncool.

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-04-15

High school? If I had seen something like this when I was in elementary school, I still would have rolled my eyes.

Do you think they're working on a play about hip-hop math, next?

badideasinaction - 2017-04-15

Calculus: The Musical has some rap sections in it iirc, so you're already covered.

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-04-15

What possesses a man to take an idea for an elementary school assembly and turn it into an overpriced play?

infinite zest - 2017-04-17

A miserable pile of secrets. But enough talk!

Nominal - 2017-04-15

Get outta my yard, lame-o!

Soooo ... people who have seen "Hamilton" like it, while people who haven't seen it conclude that people who like it must be stupid.

I haven't seen it, but I am for the most part withholding judgment. Nevertheless, here is an early bit from it, like 2009; it quickly wins a skeptical crowd over:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNFf7nMIGnE

Maybe the appeal has something to do with Hamilton's life being interesting?

Nominal - 2022-04-15

Jesus that was awful.

So Hamilton is loved by people who can't get enough of the Capitol Steps?

Cena_mark - 2022-04-15

This thread didn't age well. Hamilton is now known as the greatest broadway play ever. But you guys sure sounded cool hating on it.
