Robocop 2 was lame for me even though it was a pretty hard R because the VHS copy had Peter Weller coming out at the beginning telling you not to use drugs like the villains Robocop has to fight do. Like, lame. It was bad enough to get that message in every arcade game, including N.A.R.C, but to have the fucking star of Naked Lunch..

True. And I have been watching those re-done movie trailers and fight scenes in 4K 60FPS for this precise reason. 25 FPS covers up all the wires but 60 looks like adults in costumes involved in an elementary school version of Peter Pan.

Does that include trilogies or the current "infinite" superhero films? I guess there's not much difference really, but ostensibly a trilogy is already planned before the cameras start rolling whereas a sequel seems to depend more on the success of the first product. So Star Wars, Indiana Jones and even Iron Man 3 were arguably better films. There's some sequels that I think are better than the original, like John Wick 2 or Friday the 13th pt. 3 but generally aggregates would say otherwise, especially when it's time for thirds.

Your argument depends on the assumption that someone planned beyond Robocop 1, the debut film for some unknown foreign weirdo director, starring a bunch of unfamous bit actors.

Yeah the success of the original usually informs the sequel. Like, Lucas says in interviews that his vision for Star Wars was always in conjunction with the possibility of sequels, but I'll bet he would've kept that to himself if episode IV was a commercial and critical failure, if it was ever actually true to begin with. And his own attempts complete at least 3/4ths of the 9 often meant movies that were worse than we remember them, because they're feeding into some bigger story, blah blah blah. But Verhoeven wanted to make a silly and subversive cop action movie that was more science-fictiony than Dirty Harry or Death Wish, since science fiction was entering a renaissance of sorts with other movies about robotic detectives and such oh shit they ARE doing a new Blade Runner now I'm pissed about something else
