I'm not going to watch this whole thing, because cringe but uh... this seems like one of those times where somebody who is not funny gets a "funny idea."

infinite zest - 2017-04-26

Thing is, at its core it is a funny joke and it's been done well before. This somehow negates that core.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-26

I made it to 0:59 but I had to take a break half way.

bongoprophet - 2017-04-26

Finally a show for the pseudo-intellectual shits on "I fucking love science", the bravest stance ever taken.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-26

To be fair, it's becoming a braver stance by the day.

Gmork - 2017-04-26

Cringe is an overused word, but holy fuck is it accurate here.

BHWW - 2017-04-26

The show is just a big mess, confused as to who the audience is supposed to be. Is it for kids? You have moments like this and in the same episode an animated short where various flavors of anthropomorphic ice-cream cones carry on about how all flavors (read: gender) are fluid or something. Is it for adults? Then it lurches into serious complex science stuff, explained in simplified ways, like a really condescending person trying to explain something to a group of children. Then it has moments of Nye getting red-faced and shouty.

Xenocide - 2017-04-26

I think the problem is that scientific illiteracy is so massive in this country that if you want to reach certain groups of adults, you have to talk to them as though they're children. I get the feeling that Bill is trying to reach out to the right-wing science-denier cult with this show. And in fairness, speaking to your audience like they're particularly dumb toddlers is how Fox News has managed to prosper for two decades.

I'm not sure how that audience would respond to this, though, or if they'd watch it on their Netflix queue at all when there's Adam Sandler movies and Family Guy reruns on there.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-04-26

It speaks to the absolute inability to communicate to anyone outside the narrow segment of people that completely agree with you. The hallmark of the 21st century.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-26

Also let's not forget that we're living in an age when a pretty big percentage of adults are still kids.

A week and a half ago I worked at a talk by a renown, ivy league professor who told the audience without a bit of irony that there was no scientific consensus on whether or not Atlantis existed.

Which is yet another example of why architects should never be allowed to talk authoritatively about anything that isn't architecture.

Old_Zircon - 2017-04-26

Seriously, though, I feel like at least half of the Netflix original shows I've seen feel like their target audience are adults who are emotionally stuck somewhere between 9 and 14.

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-04-26

What an unexpected fall from grace.

NewHeavenSockman - 2017-04-26

which one of you guys tricked netflix into broadcasting john holmes motherfucker's dreams

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-04-27

This is not very good. It's not a song. It doesn't have, you know, a tune.

I got tired of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, because of the relentless focus on Rebecca's obsession. Paula is studying to become a lawyer, Pete has discovered his bisexuality. Valencia left Josh and became more vulnerable and less mean. Every character changes and grows except for Rebecca, who just goes in circles, but every episode is all about her for some reason.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend is now on Netflix, and that's a good thing. it's still brilliant, but now I can only watch it when the mood hits me. It used to be all the time.

New sex technique unlocked.

Nikon - 2017-04-26

What did the new one do with the former Bill Nye?

Also,
Mr. Wizard's World > Bill Nye the Science Guy

infinite zest - 2017-04-26

Even Beakman > Bill Nye. I never liked Bill Nye. I thought it was stupid then and stupid now. I mean, the show. Bill Nye actually seems really cool.

TeenerTot - 2017-04-26

Are you kidding? Beakman was awful! Clownish mugging the camera at dutch angles while stupid sound effects constantly play? Ick.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-04-26

I recognized as a kid very early on that there were two kinds of childrens television shows: the "kindly uncle who wants to show you things he cares about", and the "heavily market driven overgrown teenager that was to fool me into thinking learning is fun".

Beakman was the latter.

endlesschris - 2017-04-26

Beakman was wildly popular in Mexican syndication and he still does regular stage shows down there.

infinite zest - 2017-04-26

Beakman's penguin friends were named Don and Herb (aka Don Herbert AKA Mr. Wizard).

cognitivedissonance - 2017-04-26

When I was a teenager, I used to call Pat Cashman's radio show every day and do bits for him. I got to know his producer really well, and I was really excited to try to get work in the radio business, and they were very supportive of me. Then I actually got on the radio and realized it was basically just reciting the names of the 15 songs in rotation every 15 minutes and I decided it wasn't for me. (Pat Cashman was the narrator on Bill Nye's original show.)

StanleyPain - 2017-04-26

This show is fucking awful and it's an insult to people who actually regard the scientific method as important.

Having fun and doing weird shit to educate people is all fine and good, but there also has to be education. You can't just say "CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL, IDIOTS! *HAHA LOLZ POP CULTURE REFERENCE*" and then not actually follow it up with serious evidence. Even Mythbusters, which I thought was a dodgy show, tried to include actual scientific education in most of their episodes as to why or why not something would work.

I'm really disappointed this garbage is what this show turned into.

Quad9Damage - 2017-04-26

So is she trolling anti-sex evangelicals? Educating on gender non-conformity? What exactly was the point of that?

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2017-04-26

The point is "watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on The CW. Please, PLEASE watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The CW will only renew it for so long with its shit ratings".

Quad9Damage - 2017-04-27

I slipped into a Bizarro universe where Atheism and the Left is just as smug, condescending, and angry as the Right. I have now politically homeless.

TheSupafly - 2017-04-28

Smugness and condescension have always been the Left's most repelling character traits, its the anger and rigid dogmatic devotion that are new. Not sure I saw that in this video though.
