Hell, I love Hannibal and American Gods, and I was able to get into Expanse, so I think I'll actually like this. Plus it's nice to see Doug Jones in a main role, or one where you can see his face anyway.
I didn't watch the whole thing but what's the big deal? I know little about Star Trek but I know that they basically pulled a Richie's Older Brother and wrote him out of the show save for a few references, my assumption being that he's used a lot more in further ST lore. Point is, you're dealing with being true to a show that was not only NOT 5 actual years, but also did the lazy "returned to his home planet/college/army and let's never speak of him again" thing, so it's not like you're playing with Chekov's Gun here, or Phaser as it were..

garcet71283 - 2017-05-23 Well, they stated in a release about a year ago that Discovery was going to be in the "Prime" universe and not the JJverse.
Clearly someone pulled their head out of their ass and realized that the Prime universe has ceased being viable from a business standpoint and went ahead and just set this in the current mainstream universe.

infinite zest - 2017-05-23 That's probably because Brian Fuller doesn't really give a shit about that stuff. Even if you've only read or seen Silence of the Lambs, there's plenty that doesn't match up with Hannibal, but if you go and read all of Harris' Hannibal books, they're practically different stories, just with some of the same familiar names. I dunno, I like the books and they have a big following but it doesn't stop me from liking the show and a majority of the films, just like it didn't stop me from liking The Leftovers or even American Gods (so far). Continuity is important of course, and there's a part of me that's still a little miffed that Star Wars didn't adapt Dash Rendar's 'Shadows' story into the expanded universe instead of pulling the RedLetterMedia "That's Familiar!" lever, but I guess I'm OK either way

I for one am not going to write this show off yet. If even one episode has a smart sci fi concept married to a relevant character drama, it'll have my attention. I just need to see a demonstration that someone behind the scenes has some understanding of what made Trek work in the first place.
Both TNG and DS9 pretty much only had one great episode in their first seasons, and then went on to be good shows. So I'm holding out hope.

infinite zest - 2017-05-23 I was pretty young when TNG came out, so mostly what I remember were the amazing space effects, which I don't think we'd even seen in motion pictures yet. And as time went on, that's how I watched the show. And while I didn't see the first two reboot movies, I loved the third because it was charming and really pretty to boot. If nothing else, this should be very pretty, given the show's creators' other output.

I'm not a trek fan but I am kind of bummed out that they didn't go back to the look of the first show, at lest in the color plate. You can see that try tried to do a little bit of that with dark color profile of the bridge, but it doesn't work when the cast is wearing dark colors as well. That was kind of the point, we're making this for the new colored TVs, the colors have to pop! What's the point of having colors if you don't use them?
Also I like the look of the ship and how it calls back to Ralph McQuarrie's redesign of the Ship and I thought the copper/bronze paint job was very cool. It gives the ship a very different purpose just based on looks alone. I can see why people wouldn't like it, it's looks brownish and space ships are gray and I don't like things that are different.
