It's depressing that freedom of speech in the US allows for Sandy Hook truthers, race baiting rumors about Kenyan presidents and anti-vax bullshit that kills people, but draws the line at sullying the name of a commercial product.
actually the direct lies about Obama aren't protected. he could have sued for defamation if he wanted to.
It also requires proving that harm is done to an individual or corporation, so me calling you a horse semen gargling degenerate on an obscure website isn't likely to win you any damages. But when a celebrity with a quantifiable audience of consumers targets a corporation for boycotts and such, it can be very easy to prove that financial damage was done.
I know why, it's just depressing that we afford more protection to the bottom line than (in the very direct case of vaccines) human lives.
