I think both Prometheus and covenant were probably good, well-structured sci-fi movies at some point, but then editors, corporate executives and focus groups happened.

They started at Lost writers, so no they were never good.

Lost writers are reverse M. Night Shyamalans.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-05-21

The writers of "Lost" are great at coming up with really cool scenes.

They are utterly incapable of stringing those scenes together with a decent narrative, however.

So they try to pretend they're all artsy & high-concept.

I am pretty intimately familiar with Prometheus' backstory and even read the original leaked screenplay. Basically it was a very straightforward and very solid Alien prequel. A lot of good ideas and it led right into Alien. The original plot was more about the black goo turning the astronauts into creatures with the weird squidbaby thing breeding with an engineer to create the final form xenomorph we see in the end. The crashed ship was meant to be the same ship that the Nostromo discovers in Alien. It had a very differently structured story.
Then the studio basically demanded that Ridley Scott make this into a potential new series since they had no desire to make any actual Alien sequels anymore. The re-hashed script by Damon Lindelof is what wound up on-screen; a total mess of conflicting ideas and sequel bait to try and set up another movie while using ideas that were already in the film. A tiny bit of the original film as it was being produced can be seen in the deleted footage where the "undead" astronaut guy who attack the crew was actually *changed* into a weird CG zombie creature with xenomorph proportions.
Anyway...rumor is that the same thing happened with Covenant. It was intended to be a second film to end the prequel and lead into Alien and the studio was like "No, we need another endless series of sequels to milk" so this one was altered into a straightforward Alien clone with minor elements of the Prometheus backstory so there can be another 1 or 2 films. This also resulted in Alien 5 (which most people thought sounded really cool) being basically axed in favor of producing these.

Does ridley scott not have any back bone or does he just not give a fuck?

You'd think a director with all his success could do almost whatever he felt like at this point.

garcet71283 - 2017-05-22

I've come to the conclusion that Scott being allowed to do whatever he wants is the exact reason why his projects have all been crap recently. The accounts I have read place the blame for the story inconsistencies in Prometheus on Ridly Scott changing his "vision" halfway through production.

Spielberg, Lucas and Scorsese also all have demonstrated in recent years that when given unlimited creative license, they don't deliver.

I blame it on the artist brain, sometimes it's important to have someone tell them no to keep them on task.

SolRo - 2017-05-22

Okay, I got people saying it was scott that ruined it on his own or was executive meddling that ruined it.

you two need to fight to the death to decide the ultimate truth

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-22

I always assumed that after the first few episodes, the Lost writers were just monitoring fan sites and the only actual direction the narrative had was "fans think this is going to happen, so we have to do THIS instead to keep them guessing."

betamaxed - 2017-05-21

Shocking Dark was more entertaining.

They promised tubes, they delivered tubes godammit!

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-22

They promised terminators, they delivered aliens AND terminators. That's what you call giving 110%.

Lurchi - 2017-05-21

still haven't decided if I'll go see this...looking more unlikely the more I hear about it

Lurchi - 2017-05-21

do they do an episode about that idiotic King Arthur movie?

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-22

Finally! The move had been spoiled and I can wait for it to come out on Hulu.

You know what I want? An Alien movie where the giant penis bug is eating normal jack offs on a garbage barge. What about a soup factory? You can have a guy taking the lid of some soup and a face hugger can pop out.

infinite zest - 2017-05-22

Can the soup can be voiced by Jon Benjamin?

cognitivedissonance - 2017-05-22

I notice how we never see the skinny one stand up. I'm pretty sure he has some insane donkey booty problem.

Born in the RSR - 2017-05-22

Thanks for getting me to google that Cog.

infinite zest - 2017-05-22

Is this a surprise to anybody that this sucks? This was the exact same trajectory with Terminator: first one is a classic to most, second one is undeniably fun hollywood stuff, third one in both cases are OK films but nobody will argue that they're not as good as one and two, and four, five, etc. who gives a fuck anymore? NOBODY gave a fuck that Arnold came back for whatever shitty sequel, so why would people assume that Scott, who can't direct a cat out of a bag most of the time in the first place, could re-create the magic of Alien, when he himself fucked up Alien? Also Dark Star was a million times better than Alien. Alien really wasn't very good in retrospect, it just looked neat in that mid-90s Doom.wad kinda way.

SolRo - 2017-05-23

actually i'm surprised it has a 72 on rottentomatoes.

SolRo - 2017-05-23

hah.

just found out it's the exact same 72 that Prometheus got

Two Jar Slave - 2017-05-24

Ridley Scott is a gun for hire. He's cranked out 25 movies since 1977, and his greatest accomplishment is that you've forgotten 22 of them.
