The skirt is right!

Hazelnut - 2017-05-27

Made it a few minutes in. I dunno. I'm going to keep making fun of our illegitimate President's tiny hands, cock holster mouth, and failing virility. I'm also still going to enjoy being a man, enjoy the expectations of strength and personal responsibility that emplies, and yeah enjoy being occasionally dominant. Is that toxic? I dunno, everybody's supposed to be able to celebrate their sexuality, surely that applies to heterosexuals too?

Hazelnut - 2017-05-27

Yeah, I wrote "emplies". You gonna fight me?

TheyUsedDarkForces - 2017-05-27

I'm also a man.

Occasionally dominant, HUH? Them's fightin' words! Maybe you'd rather be dead, friend?

A stool is shoved noisily away from the bar, a hush falls over the crowd. Spurs jingle.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-05-27

Exits are NORTH and NORTH-EAST.

Hazelnut - 2017-05-27

Well done TUDF for coming out as a man! Admittedly, it's easier behind an alias.

Fight you in the lot behind BevMo at six.

StanleyPain - 2017-05-27

I like Sarkeesian, and I get all this "don't be like Trump to be anti-Trump: stuff, but I think a lot of people really have no understanding of genuine irony, satire, or making fun of hypocrisy. This is understandable given the horrible beating those concepts have taken thanks to alt-reich/MRA shitheads on the internet for years, but it something people like her need to really work on.

I.e., when you make fun of a virulently anti-gay politician for possibly being gay, it is not homophobia and you are really dumb for thinking it is.

Cena_mark - 2017-05-27

Right wingers merely pretend to be PC when they think it can benefit them. They acted horrified by Colbert describing Trump's mouth as Putin's cockholster. They think PC works on the same level as telling on a fellow student in school who just said a naughty word.
They didn't even get the point of the insult. It wasn't that Colbert was implying that Trump is gay, it's that he's Putin's bitch.

Hazelnut - 2017-05-27

Yeah I made it through and she says, and I quote, "What would actually be transgressive and challenging to Trump is a resistance that works to dismantle the very notions of patriarchy and power that helped propel him to the presidency. A resistance that defies rigid notions of masculinity and femininity and loudly embraces people of all genders and all gender expressions."

Erm, no, what would be challenging to Trump is to CHALLENGE TRUMP. On Russia, on the health care debacle, on his joke of a tax plan, on the wall. There is no need to conflate that with a war on masculinity that much of the country sure won't appreciate.

I do agree with Cena that the right is worse than the left at acting all pearl-clutching and appalled and offended. But Anita is a right-winger in spirit.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-05-27

Context only matters when you're talking about someone on the approved enemies list.

Check.

Raggamuffin - 2017-05-27

If there is one thing that I can't stand on the left is the tendency to keep stepping back to address broader and broader viewpoints. Eventually you're talking about everything, and therefore not really addressing anything.

jfcaron_ca - 2017-05-27

As I understand it, the left does this kind of broadening and re-centering of debate because it actually thrives on nuance and self-reflection. To the point of it being harmful I mean, this isn't necessarily praise.

To hypocritically binarize, the right thrives on the erasure of nuance (left/right, male/female, us/them, good/evil). Unfortunately when dealing with an irrational and uneducated population in a democracy, nuance doesn't exactly get you people's attention or their votes.

To extremize, fascism IS a stronger ideology in that it requires less work by the individuals in the membership. That's why in my opinion you have to become a little fascist in order to defeat other fascism. The trick is to not lose yourself in the process. =(

Meerkat - 2017-05-27

What would be challenging to Trump is one of those little puzzles where you move the tiles around to get the numbers in the right order.

15th - 2017-05-30

I think the vast majority of funny comedians lean left, but explicitly leftist "political comedy" is so ideologically swollen and smug it's approaching levels of Republican stand-up shittiness. It's pretty gross.

To the Pepe peoples' credit, they have absolutely kicked our asses in political comedy, especially on the internet - where it counts - these last couple years. It's not a trivial thing, it's like the Beatles records in the Soviet Union, but bizzaro world. Dank ass memes are the soft power of the culture wars, m8.

The answer is more sassy trump, not fucking hand wringing.

betamaxed - 2017-05-27

"Sure we're starving to death in this gulag but at least we didn't use a gender specific insult when protesting against Donald Trump."

Chancho - 2017-05-27

You insult people with the words that get closest to their personal anxieties.

Putin is so homophobic that he's passed a law making it illegal to show him as a gay clown. Literally. What better way to piss him off than to show him making out with Trump?

5 stars for Sarkeesian's money-grubbing evil.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-05-27

The Left doesn't want to win and the Right hates governing.

Xenocide - 2017-05-28

Yeah okay, this time she's wrong. Hijacking misogyny in order to wreck a misogynist is something I can get behind.

jfcaron_ca - 2017-05-28

I think you are right if you are talking about wrecking a regular human who responds to social pressures. Trump is no such human. He seems thin-skinned but I am convinced that all the tweets and such are an act.

My take on Sarkeesian's point is that we perform these misogynistic messages against Trump for each other. Given the general lack of political awareness in the public, it's clear how specific e.g. homophobic humour can easily turn into a normalization of homophobia.

Hooker - 2017-05-29

Is there any indication we are, in any way or fashion, becoming _more_ homophobic as a culture? Like, how do you get to say "easily" when we went from Obama not being on board with gay marriage in 2008 to gay marriage across the country within his Presidency? Or was it Colbert's dumb joke that stemmed that tide and we're going back to gay bashing any minute?

This is just more liberals trying to control people's thoughts by controlling people's language.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-05-28

Dear Femcunt,
Please don't attempt to be offended on my behalf.

Signed,
A Faggot

Quad9Damage - 2017-05-29

There is no employment, there is Kickstarter.
There is no fitness, there is fat negativity.
There is no context, there is sexism.
There is no punchline, there is homophobia.
There is no fun, there is Sarkeesian.

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-05-29

She's too shallow to handle pop culture, so she decided to try politics.

15th - 2017-05-30

I'm not going to watch this, but she better not be taking a swipe at Sassy Trump.
