book nerds; is 120 dollars for this a good deal or a rip-off?

I'm leaning toward rip-off. Someone who is interested in this likely already has Lovecraft's stuff in one format or another. Tough to justify the price when it'd go toward replacing something that's already serviceable. Kinda like when they release box sets for Star Wars or whatever, with a couple extra special features, and expect that little whiff of exclusivity to carry it.

Folio Society books hold their value really, really well. I frequently peruse their website and fantasize about owning everything, which I won't. They have a very active collector's second hand market.

Given that the $120 edition doesn't seem to be a limited printing, I wouldn't. They're certainly very attractive, but personally I'd find it hard to justify. If it was limited edition, then definitely; when I went through my occult phase and bought a bunch of limited edition books, I was at least able to recoup my losses (and then some) down the line when their worth skyrocketed; I don't see that happening with a non-limited, non-numbered edition.

It's a nice volume, but since there's no author or estate to pay, the price makes me think it's mildly scammy.

Lovecraft's stories have been public domain for ages, which is why there are so many mediocre, badly edited compilations of his work out there. I appreciate the artistry behind the volumes (I especially liked Penguin's Lovecraft anthology released in 2015-2016 in black hardback), but I dunno.

I bought the complete works of Lovecraft for 1.99 on Google Plus

Whenever I come across a Franklin at my work (I buy/sell used books), my first thought is always "shame it's not an Easton." Honestly, if you want something for an investment, go with those. Otherwise, there is a Barnes & Noble collection of his that has a neat "space-trippy" cover you can get for $15-25
