John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-06-16

The real star of this scene is Angelo Badalamenti.

It makes me sad that Roger Ebert wasn't alive to see the new Twin Peaks... I think over the years his opinion of Blue Velvet changed, but he famously hated it on At the Movies. I think Ebeet would've appreciate what Lunch is doing, especially with the reveal shot of Diane is like a cover version of this scene.

I don't know if I'd call it a cover version, but it definitely evoked this scene. It came right back to me, and I hadn't seen Blue Velvet in at least 10 years. So it wouldn't have surprised me if Lynch had a similar association.

This was the first time I ever saw Laura Dern. In 1986, she was nineteen years old. Of all the sex kittens of the movies, she was not the sexiest, but she was among the most kittenish. I would love her for years. Now that she's Dianne, I'm probably going to love her more than ever, because she's clearly NOT a kitten any more. But in 1986, she was undeniably really something.

And yet, in that first dramatic moment, she comes out of the darkness looking plain, almost blank. At first it's not a flattering shot. Her emerging features seem out of proportion, not what you were expecting. but as you start to get the whole, your eyes and your mind recognize the form of an attractive young woman.

The shot isn't ambigiuous about being potentious, but it's very ambiguous about what it portends. Notice how the music swells romantically, and then takes a sharp turn toward the onimous. They're walking toward the bad neighborhood, toward love and violence, toward Lincoln, and it's hard to tell who's leading who.

Wow that's quite the impression! I've liked her for years but I'm pretty sure my introduction to her was the Jurassic Park movies, so I guess I already had a picture of her saving everyone's ass from dinosaurs, and Frank's a pushover compared to dinosaurs, right? And Citizen Ruth might very well be my favorite Alexander Payne movie, beating out her own father's performance in Payne's 'Nebraska.' All around kickass Dern.

(David Lunch? To be fair I wrote that first part on my cellphone so that was lazy autocorrect gone wild)

Possibly the best scene in cinematic history to contain the line "Are you the one that found the ear?"
