Yeah, about that. Flintheart Glomgold's entire gimmick is that he's physically indistinguishable from Scrooge, he merely wears a tam 'o shatter and a kilt. Making him fat is kind of missing the point.

The show also opted to make H/D/L more distinct. That's fine, so long as they make it work.

Wow holy shit I had no idea Broadchurch was involved! That makes me like it even more. At first I didn't like how they made the Nanny kind of a bitch but Webby's role as something beyond a scared little girl like she pretty much was in the original definitely makes up for Nanny. The old Ducktales' house was kind of missing such clashes of style, value, etc. The horse joke I thought was a little 3dgy but damn if I didn't laugh. I assume this will be on Hulu so I'll definitely watch!

They actually did something impressive with Glomgold - they made him South African again, after it was retconned away thanks to Apartheid. They've even got a South African voicing him with a hammy fake Scottish accent! The implication is that he's only pretending to be Scottish, having become determined to be the anti-Scrooge. He could well be a deconstruction of the concept of the evil counterpart.

Would the kids even know what a Boer accent sounds like?

I like what they did with Mrs. Beakley because in the first series she was able to outsmart the boys early on but then she became kind of boring. Just a basic caring grandma without much else going on. They gave a lot more character to Fenton Crackshell's mother in the trailer park. So I like they are trying to make her more interesting. Not sure I love the new dumber version of Launchpad. Danny Pudi should be in way more movies and shows because I love him.

Also they got rid of the butler character dude and just replaced him with SuperNanny as she's doing both roles.

As I recall in the comics Mom is just fine but... Because of Einsteiny-Winestiney stuff she's is out of the picture for longer than the cast will live out their lifetimes. Barring some plot device.

Not at all hipster -- they definitely aren't going the route that the kids are all cooler / smarter / more capable than the adults (who are all timid clueless idiots). I think they get the balance right, that the kids are rambunctious but inexperienced, and Uncle Scrooge likes that they keep things interesting.

Dewey DOES try for a cooler-than-thou moment with the walkway and the lasers, but not only did he need to be saved a dozen times, Uncle Scrooge had a better way to cross the chasm.

Yeah I don't mean "hipster" as derogatory; at this point I've accepted people labeling me with that, and if that's because I like Twin Peaks and Ducktales (both the bands and the shows) then "meow" from a hipster in Portland. I just mean it being more hip, pretty much in the ways that you describe, and the balance is nailed, even more so (thus far) than Gravity Falls, which sometimes was like "ok, what 9 year-old gets why Neil Hamburger is funny in this (or what 9 year-old gets Hamburger's style of comedy) or even remembers Coolio? I'm 35 and don't remember Coolio. It's still not as bad as all the "adult" jokes in Animaniacs though: it's like "Roger Daltry? In the mid-90s, for a target audiance of maybe 10-14. Still 3/4ths of the band were alive at that point but that hadn't been culturally relevant since Moon's death and the trampling tragedy in Cincinatti, 3 years before I was born, so what's so funny about a man swinging a microphone above his head in a restaurant full of other WB properties?

Because if Disney doesn't find new ways to introduce classic characters to a new generation, they can't trade in on nostalgia to sell product.
Rebooting Ducktales in the way that they are is pretty genius. They largely kept a "classic" art style, so any hardcore adult animation / comics fan will be happy. They cast some of the most likable character actors in a show that parents will have watched growing up, so they will encourage their kids to watch it. And the finished product is good, if highly calculated. Barring some DT superfan huffing into a laptop mic about how they ruined the show by removing the butler, they are going to avoid most fan backlash, which is pretty incredible.
