I was worried at the beginning when it looked like at least one of the boys (and possibly all three) were going to be Poochy, but the show didn't go there. I was pleased. I smiled every time David Tennant sounded just like David Tennant.

Any chance we can get Peter Capaldi to play a Scottish duck who is ill-tempered even by Scottish duck standards?

cognitivedissonance - 2017-08-17

Yeah, about that. Flintheart Glomgold's entire gimmick is that he's physically indistinguishable from Scrooge, he merely wears a tam 'o shatter and a kilt. Making him fat is kind of missing the point.

Apparently John D. Rockerduck will have a bigger presence later on. And Paul F. Thompkins is going to be Gladstone Gander!

The show also opted to make H/D/L more distinct. That's fine, so long as they make it work.

I don't think they want to insert these words in Flintheart Glomgold's mouth:

Wow holy shit I had no idea Broadchurch was involved! That makes me like it even more. At first I didn't like how they made the Nanny kind of a bitch but Webby's role as something beyond a scared little girl like she pretty much was in the original definitely makes up for Nanny. The old Ducktales' house was kind of missing such clashes of style, value, etc. The horse joke I thought was a little 3dgy but damn if I didn't laugh. I assume this will be on Hulu so I'll definitely watch!

They actually did something impressive with Glomgold - they made him South African again, after it was retconned away thanks to Apartheid. They've even got a South African voicing him with a hammy fake Scottish accent! The implication is that he's only pretending to be Scottish, having become determined to be the anti-Scrooge. He could well be a deconstruction of the concept of the evil counterpart.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-08-17

Would the kids even know what a Boer accent sounds like?

BiggerJ - 2017-08-17

Wait, sorry, not South African, Africa-American. But still!

BiggerJ - 2017-08-17

The actor's African American, I mean.

I like what they did with Mrs. Beakley because in the first series she was able to outsmart the boys early on but then she became kind of boring. Just a basic caring grandma without much else going on. They gave a lot more character to Fenton Crackshell's mother in the trailer park. So I like they are trying to make her more interesting. Not sure I love the new dumber version of Launchpad. Danny Pudi should be in way more movies and shows because I love him.

Also they got rid of the butler character dude and just replaced him with SuperNanny as she's doing both roles.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-08-18

Did you see Danny Pudi's miniseries of ads for Hearthstone? Pretty great.

Cena_mark - 2017-08-18

They already tried making Huey, Dewey, and Louie into Poochy. It was called Quack Pack.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-08-18

Oh man, I hope they reference the Mighty Ducks at some point. That would be earthshattering.

Bort - 2017-08-18

Oh shit, "Quack Pack":

BiggerJ - 2017-08-17

The sheer BALLS of them at the end. Season 1's ongoing arc is going to tackle one of the questions Disney pretty much declared verboten.

Jeriko-1 - 2017-08-18

As I recall in the comics Mom is just fine but... Because of Einsteiny-Winestiney stuff she's is out of the picture for longer than the cast will live out their lifetimes. Barring some plot device.

infinite zest - 2017-08-18

It's hipster as fuck this time, but it's kinda like when The Kids started liking Tony Bennet via Lady Gaga. Remove a few filters and it's Tony Fucking Ducktales

fedex - 2017-08-18

all the kids sound like they are 18

Bort - 2017-08-18

Not at all hipster -- they definitely aren't going the route that the kids are all cooler / smarter / more capable than the adults (who are all timid clueless idiots). I think they get the balance right, that the kids are rambunctious but inexperienced, and Uncle Scrooge likes that they keep things interesting.

Dewey DOES try for a cooler-than-thou moment with the walkway and the lasers, but not only did he need to be saved a dozen times, Uncle Scrooge had a better way to cross the chasm.

infinite zest - 2017-08-18

Yeah I don't mean "hipster" as derogatory; at this point I've accepted people labeling me with that, and if that's because I like Twin Peaks and Ducktales (both the bands and the shows) then "meow" from a hipster in Portland. I just mean it being more hip, pretty much in the ways that you describe, and the balance is nailed, even more so (thus far) than Gravity Falls, which sometimes was like "ok, what 9 year-old gets why Neil Hamburger is funny in this (or what 9 year-old gets Hamburger's style of comedy) or even remembers Coolio? I'm 35 and don't remember Coolio. It's still not as bad as all the "adult" jokes in Animaniacs though: it's like "Roger Daltry? In the mid-90s, for a target audiance of maybe 10-14. Still 3/4ths of the band were alive at that point but that hadn't been culturally relevant since Moon's death and the trampling tragedy in Cincinatti, 3 years before I was born, so what's so funny about a man swinging a microphone above his head in a restaurant full of other WB properties?

animegurl1000 - 2017-08-18

I always took the 20-years-out-of-date pop culture references were an easy way to pander to bored parents that might be waitching with their kids, so the producers can go "See? Parents enjoy our show too!"

infinite zest - 2017-08-19

Yeah pretty much the same thing. Hipsters having hipsters... :)

animegurl1000 - 2017-08-18

Good god, way to not proof read.

Gmork - 2017-08-19

i mean, i liked it as a kid... but why?

snothouse - 2017-08-19

Because if Disney doesn't find new ways to introduce classic characters to a new generation, they can't trade in on nostalgia to sell product.
Rebooting Ducktales in the way that they are is pretty genius. They largely kept a "classic" art style, so any hardcore adult animation / comics fan will be happy. They cast some of the most likable character actors in a show that parents will have watched growing up, so they will encourage their kids to watch it. And the finished product is good, if highly calculated. Barring some DT superfan huffing into a laptop mic about how they ruined the show by removing the butler, they are going to avoid most fan backlash, which is pretty incredible.
