Stupid CBS, he isn't dead yet. Though I guess if the report about the lack of brain activity is true, it doesn't matter.

Quad9Damage - 2017-10-03

Yeah, what's up with that? He was reported dead immediately upon discovery but didn't actually die until 8:40 last night. I guess all hope lost is calling it now?

The Mothership - 2017-10-03

Tower Records cameo!

Fuck 2017.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-10-03

Music my dad likes!

Quad9Damage - 2017-10-03

I like this music.

Old_Zircon - 2017-10-03

I like Petty, more so since I discovered that he's one of the few good artists of his ilk that hasn't been embraced by local music hipsters and still makes them yell like 12 year olds if you put it on.

Plus that wood block part in Learning To Fly is super catchy.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-10-03

I’ve never been a fan, but once I was on the Coast Starlight running from Portland to San Francisco, and the conductor slows the train down and makes everybody move to the left side to see the place where Tom Petty met Kevin Costner in “The Postman”.

Tom Petty rules.

freedoom - 2017-10-03

Is that Ian McShane at 2:26?

exy - 2017-10-03

I'd say no

StanleyPain - 2017-10-03

I don't hate Tom Petty, but it's interesting how I can honestly say I never heard a single fucking thing about him ever from anyone I know, and now overnight he's apparently the greatest musician who ever lived in the history of ever. I know death tends to inflate those kinds of things, but jesus it's ridiculous the hagiographic shit on social media going on with him. He was fine, but christ, he wasn't THAT good. Also, note, a lot of the stuff people absolutely adore by him was all stuff written by Jeff Lynne, so maybe calm down before the sainthood or whatever.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-10-03

Jeff Lynne is my Tom Petty!

poorwill - 2017-10-03

This happens with every famous artist, why pick on Tom Petty? Where were you when Chester Bennington was getting his posthumous 'well, he wasn't that bad I guess'? No, it has to be Tom Petty, an actual good songwriter -and to bring everyone down to 'reality' you actually *lie* by saying Jeff Lynne wrote songs that he only co-wrote. Fuck you, you malignantly stupid piece of shit.

15th - 2017-10-03

Tom Petty wasn't esoteric. Common people music.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-10-03

Honestly, he was never one of my favorites, but in his passing, I'm left with 40 years of nothing but positive impressions, and a sense of shock, just because he'd always seemed so boyish.

Besides the memory of seeing him live when I was 20, which i described below, I will always remember him singing "Won't Back Down" on TV a few days after 9/11. In the middle of all the flag waving and sporadic hate crimes, the weird sense of being alone with your own fears (Springsteen wrote a song about 9/11 called "Lonely Day"), it was nice to know that Tom Petty intended to still be Tom Petty.

And I always liked his voice. He sang like Dylan, if Dylan could sing.

exy - 2017-10-03

If I have this straight, my wife's friend's cousin was once married to Tom Petty, and says he was an asshole, but (a) bias, and (b) of course he was, he's a rock star. Still, pretty catchy music

il fiore bel - 2017-10-04

"I totally welcome criticism and bashing of a person I admire and whose death is currently gutting the shit out of me!"

Said no one ever.

il fiore bel - 2017-10-04

For the record, that was a reply to Stanley. I'm not referring to facts or other people's first hand experiences.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-10-03

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during an outdoor show in July 1978. It was something of a disaster. Ticket sales were shit, half the bands cancelled, and then, somewhere between the second and third sets, the heavens just opened up. The tiny crowd stood out in the rain for an hour and and a half or more, refusing to give up

They'd let us bring beer in, cans only. The drinking age was 18, I was 20, and I was I was in fine form, shouting "ROCK AND ROLL!!! GET IT ON THE STAGE!!" over and over. I remember an older guy I had just met there passing me a joint. He had a David Crosby mustache and he nodded sagely. "That's right.", he said. "Exactly. Get it on the stage."

It took a long time to set the equipment back up after the rainstorm, but the bands that played really seemed to appreciate the audience sticking it out. And when Tom Petty hit the stage with "I Need To Know" , he was definitely on. It was a great moment, and that's still my favorite Tom Petty Song.

And when he ad libbed a line about standing out in the rain during "Breakdown", it felt like love.

bawbag - 2017-10-03

Run down that dream Tom. :(

Quad9Damage - 2017-10-04

He learned to fly. He got some wings.
