Which is arguably somewhat true, at least among some segments of the white population. Connecting it with mass shootings just because a few shooters have experienced some kind of failure before their crimes... it seems kind of spurious.

Is it really any different than, in the wake of a police shooting, writing some article about how the ones black people should really be worried about are other black people and using the statistics to back that up? They superficially support that idea, if you ignore everything else harder to quantify. That's why racists use them.

But yeah, she's obnoxious and I don't think it's a stretch to say her heart's not in the right place... but the article is kinda fucked up.

What I find more offensive, though, is just the glut of superfluous news coverage whenever one of these things happens. Speculation way out of left field like this, whether or not the brother or gf saw it coming, and things like that.

It seems like really poor taste to me to try and cover the absence of available information with wild theories and nonsensical garbage. If there really is a clamor for more info, then the story should really be putting pressure on investigators to release it.

Why are you making a point about a recent tweet in Newsweek by citing the Washington Post in 2012?

The greatest possible example of white people feeling entitled is what they consider to be oppression. Here we have a tweet by Newsweek showing white people in an unflattering light. Big fucking deal.

To make generalized statements about "white people" is certainly offensive, but I suspect a criminologist would be talking about white offenders vs. black offenders.

I'm not convinced that it's not true that white people in the US, anyway have a sense of entitlement, and yes, I am including myself in that, but I don't think you can prove it, so you shouldn't say it, at least without a little qualifying.

What if I were to tell you that, according to DOJ figures for a recent year (I think it was 2014) 92 per cent of all murder convictions are given to ONE PARTICULAR GENDER? I want to keep this argument as abstract as possible, so I won't name the gender. Okay, it's male.

According to the FBI, In 2015, the estimated number of murders was 15,696. In the last Census, the number of males was 151.8 millions. So that's a little more that 1 murder for every 10 thousand male persons.

So even if most murders are done by males, murders are rare enough so knowing that information will tell us something about the typical murderer, but nothing about the typical male.

Now, I'm assuming that this what this dumb cunt in the video doesn't understand that is "mass shootings" denotes a very specific type of murder that is being measured separately from "gang violence".

So if most "mass shootings" are done by white males, that information may tell us something about mass shooters. It doesn't tell us anything about white males, since

If most "gang" murders are done by non-white males, that may tell us something about gang murders. It tells us nothing about non-white males.

I tried to say above what's in that politifact entry.

Essentially, if you go with the 54% number they're using, white men are actually statistically under-represented in the perpetration of mass shootings. The expert they consulted is using a different statistic he feels is more accurate that lines up pretty closely with ethnic distribution in the general population... which I have no reason to question.

Either way, the Newsweek articles suggestion that "white entitlement" causes white people to disproportionately cause mass shootings just isn't supported by either set of numbers.

Of course, if you're of the "everything ever is all the time racism" mindset... then yeah, you're going to reject this conclusion.

I refuse to read the fucking article, because i reject out of hand the idea that the actions of maybe one in 50 thousand white men has anything to teach us about the other 49,999.

if you're a man, you automatically have something in common with the vast majority of murderers, but whether you're a man or a woman, black or white, the odds in favor if you NOT being a murderer are overwhelming. Certainly, a plurality of mass shooters are white males, and if a criminologist says that these cases have to do with a feeling of entitlement, that seems like a reasonable hypothesis. But that doesn't necessarily mean that all the many many white man who are not criminals are somehow tainted.

There's a lot that's stupid about this discussion, but the stupidest part just may be that certain idiots on the internet want to argue about race, when gender is a much more reliable predictor of violence, even if it's not really a reliable predictor either.
