Ya know, 20 years later, if you're like me and you take a lot of photos, DVD-R is still among the most cost-effective ways to store thousands of them offline at least if you buy 50 to 100 of them at once on spindles. I also save them on thumb drives, but it's nice to have them stored on DVD-R as well as backup. It may be obsolete tech, but it still has its uses.

I also have a BluRay drive although if I had known how many hoops you have to jump through to get freaking BluRay movies you own to play on your own computer, I probably wouldn't have paid the extra money for it.

Every year I like to burn a lot of 720 mkv videos to data DVD-Rs and send them to a pal as gifts. I send them media mail so it doesn't cost a lot to ship, and the discs themselves are inexpensive.

Another thing about DVD-R, I know they say the shelf life for burned disks is only around 5 years, but I have ones that are over a decade old now and they still read fine.

I think the "5 years" number is just the low end, assuming you're not storing them stupidly (like in really moist environments or exposed to sunlight).

I like the fact that whoever uploaded this failed to deinterlace it beforehand, aptly reminding us all of the worst aspect of the DVD format.

A friend of mine had an early DVD player that couldn't decode the interlaced chroma correctly, (I think?), so any brightly saturated colors had horizontal streaks through them. And the stupid thing probably cost over $500

A Playstation 2 really did work better than most of those players.

I have a blue-ray drive I use to burn my photos onto double-sided 50gb BD-RE disks

sasazuka - 2017-11-22

Yeah, I've been meaning to switch to burning photos to Blu since I do have the burner for it but I still have half a spindle of blank DVD-Rs that will take me another few years to get to using all up.

Though maybe I ought to get a small number of BD-Rs anyway and transfer the older DVD-R photo disks I have to a single BD-R, since the Blu-Ray burner is external while this laptop has an internal DVD drive, so it should be an easy copy-paste job in Windows Explorer.
