No, I think I probably conflated it with the death of another sitcom actor from the same general era, possibly even someone else from the Andy Griffith Show, which had a large supporting cast.

It may even be George Lindsey, the actor for Goober Pyle, a character which started out as Goober Beasley but who was later retconned into being Gomer Pyle's cousin. He died in 2012, which seems to be about the right time frame for what I vaguely remember, and I can easily imagine people hearing about the actor for one of the G. Pyle characters dying and confusing it with the actor for the other character.

I haven't actually watched much of any of the Andy Griffith Show anyway, it's one of those shows I know more about from references in pop culture than watching it directly.

I think you nailed it right there. I had no idea there were two G Pyle characters and might have been mildly confused by this. And as you know, mild confusion is a symptom of quantum weirdness. At least, I get mildly confused by physics text books.

It's kinda like with the phenomena-namer for the "Mandela Effect", people confuse Nelson Mandela, who didn't die in jail, with Stephen Biko, who did die in jail. Okay, to be precise, Biko actually died in a holding cell in a hospital after being beaten by police during interrogation at a police station, but it's close enough to "died in jail" that I can easily imagine it's the anti-apartheid activist death that people conflate with Nelson Mandela.
