The final dystopian twist is that the people who write all of these poems about the experience of working through Mechanical Turk are paid as nickel per poem (up from a penny), aren't told anything about what they are being used for, and under Google's TOS grant full ownership of the poems to the anonymous operator of the Twitter feed. Exploiting workers as a piece of conceptual art about the exploitation if workers.

Can't rape the willing.

Old_Zircon - 2017-12-09

Pretty confident there are very, very few people who willingly work through Mechanical Turk, though.

Two types:

- Third world guys in Internet cafes

- The housebound victim of Welfare-to-Work.

I am complicit in this, I’ve utilized it.

There's a pretty active community surrounding mturk.

You can make actually decent money (if you want to consider federal minimum wage decent) if you're willing to work for basically free for a month or two to get your ranking up (to get the slightly better assignments) and figure out the browser plugins made by the community to mostly automate the work.

I tried it once, but I didn't really have the patience for it.

Average is $2-$3/hr

Federal minimum wage is decent in some countries I suppose, certainly not in the USA.

For example, I live in an apartment that is pretty run down, paying about 60% what most people pay in my neighborhood (with all utilities included on top of that, which is easily a $100-$200 monthly saving on heat in the winter), which is a pretty mixed income one, and if I was working full time at federal minimum wage, after rent and internet access I would have about $100 left over per month to cover food, all other living expenses, and transportation. And that's before taxes.

I buy that the average is $2-$3/hr, with the caveat that people who get sick of working for $0.25/hr for a long break-in period of the most mind-numbing tasks imaginable often just give up and never "get good".

I wasn't trying to say it's "good" money... just that if you can tolerate the work and the prerequisite "training" period, it's not quite as abysmal as people sometimes think.

The bleak thing is the actual work itself. The non-skilled stuff is mostly filling out idiotic questionnaires so they can make sure you're googling the right things, and they're sprinkled with vague questions or directions designed to trick you so that you do 95% of the work but make a mistake and they can still deny you payment for the task if they want to.

I was on Mechanical Turk while I was unemployed. I wound up writing a series of short articles on turn of the century steam tractors for some dude's blog. I found it a basically positive experience because it was something to do that, didn't cost money, wasn't self loathing, and it got me down to the library to do research on tractors.

The other neat thing I wound up doing was researching Islamic financial instruments. Apparently someone wanted a list of the legal authorities who had certified that the funds were not haram.

They'll never be able to fully make a Mechanical Turk that replaces a real Turk until it learns how to post Youtube videos calling Albanians and Greeks gay and threatening to "reclaim the rest of Cyprus."

I'm usually not a fan of vocoders, but I'll make an exception for this.
