america has always been made up of tides of people coming from shithole countries. this is what made the great american experiment inspirational and unique; it took the poorest and most destitute people from around the world, and showed that all that anyone needs to succeed is freedom, opportunity, and time.

amazingly, it wasn't all horseshit. as it turned out, the shittiness of famine-struck ireland had nothing to do with the average irishman. the shittiness of pre-war italy or salazar's portugal had nothing to do with the average italian or portuguese. when these groups came to america and were given a chance to live and work and flourish, they found success, proving that a shithole country isn't a reflection of a shithole people.

unless those shithole countries are black, obviously

Trump wants well-educated white people from countries with high standards of living, good functioning representative governments and the strongest social safety nets on the planet to move to America; The land of 'Got mine, fuck you!'

I'll grant you this much, even "The New Colossus" (written in honor of the Statue of Liberty) strongly implies that other countries can be shitty. If all Trump said was that other countries are shitholes, we could ding him on artlessness and lack of diplomacy. And that would be bad enough.

But "The New Colossus" ALSO says: "give me your tired, your poor, your etc etc etc". The promise of this country is supposed to be that we welcome newcomers and embrace them as equals. What Trump said is that we don't want them because they would be a burden. From there, it's up to you to decide whether he sees them as inherently inferior. (Hint: if he felt they had anything to contribute to this country, he wouldn't want them to stay out.)

Friedrich Drumpf wasn't a wealthy European aristocrat when he came to this country, yet we let him in. As it works out, he's the one who should have been sent back to his hut.

Considering he was a literal pimp, in that he procured prostitutes in the woods outside of Seattle, he was a rapist and he probably brought drugs.

So if people leave a country in large numbers it's a shithole? Then America must be a tremendous shithole, considering that there's more than 10 million American expats out there.

And anyway, if the reason is so self-evident, why did Trump even ask the question? By your logic it's self-explanatory.

But if asking why we get people from Haiti instead of people from Norway is just Trump's chickenshit way of complaining that he wishes all immigrants were white people, then it makes sense for him to open the face-dumpster people have charitably nicknamed his mouth.
