Much like Wonder Woman it is a mediocre movie has had the hype machine manipulated by the studios to make it out to be some sort of profound cultural event.
I saw the movie with an open mind, making sure not to read any reviews ahead of time. I had heard about the "Rotten Tomatoes score", and the hype surrounding the supposed cultural significance of the movie, but that was about it.
The writing was not up to the standard of the rest of the marvel movies (this felt more like one of the D.C. Movies in that regard) and the humor fell flat. For me this was the biggest strike, the Marvel movies may not be works of art but what they always seem able to do is entertain through the dialog and make me laugh a couple times.
The acting was, simply put, bad. The protagonist cast's acting was generally stiff, unlikable, and I felt like none of them wanted to be there. The antagonist cast tried hard with bad materiel and did a good job, but they weren't in enough of the movie to fix this.
The special effects felt cheap. And the director clearly wasn't comfortable directing action, as the scenes were sloppy and hard to follow. I will say that when the director and actors were relieved of the "action" and "marvel" stuff, their talents came through and I warmed up to them. Unfortunately this makes up only a sliver of the movie.

For me, it is a 2 star movie.

Superhero movies, so far, seem to be this amazing paradox of incoherent and formulaic at the same time. Like if Ayn Rand had conceived of Teletubbies.

This does, however, look like the first Marvel movie that offers actual eye candy to the dude on dude scene, instead of doughy slobs next to hot women who have no character or point. It's about damned time.

Chris Hemsworth, doughy slob.

Scruffy slob is acceptable.
Chris Evans is also okay to look at.

That's two out of infinity, I think the rule is proven.

Yeah Black Panther owned

Hugo Gorilla - 2018-02-26

Black Panther's little sister was annoyingly cute. The villains were more interesting than the super hero. I wish we learn more about Wakanda and their rival kingdom of the gorilla totem tribe. Speaking of which, the movie origins of Wakanda is almost the same as Gorilla City from DC Comics. And the cocky-doody

Red Letter Media seems to be taking a break from the wacky narrative of schlub repairmen ripping off a senile old man. Their last review was wholly dedicated to ending the Plinket/Jay marriage arc at a Las Vegas chapel where they summon a demon to get out of the corner the story found itself in.

And I forgot what was coming after "cocky-doody."

Groan.

I stopped watching after 6 ish minutes when I feel they probably made their only worthy point.

I think we all know that every hollywood and marvel movie is basically doing the same thing, making a globally translatable formula that has particular niche market pull, for which this movie is just another pass at the same formula.

They say here that this movie could have been an entertaining chance to debate about the real world SAFE and FAIR use of technological "magic," and that the metaphor of Wakanda was wasted in too-long battle/action scenes. (particularly when it comes to Africa, which ironically supplies most of the world's precious metals that are used in key components of modern computing devices, yet enjoys very little of the benefits of the technology its precious metals allow for -- see VICE)

The real point, to these manchildren and to anyone who thinks that a Marvel movie is where they might find debate and philosophy, is that you're not the right demographic and that is all. There is good sci fi out there, mostly in books (not marvel universe gunk), but they don't have anywhere near as good of a materials-gains market like the comic book shit does, so the comic book shit gets made into a movie. Diamond Age is an amazing setting by Neal Stephenson, but its TV adaptation fizzled. Maybe they thought the nanomachines that can liquify your body by activating an enzyme to indiscriminately destroy your body proteins was a little too terrifying for kiddos to get behind and buy t-shirts for.

Didn't know we had such devoted Rick and Morty fans here.

"particularly when it comes to Africa, which ironically supplies most of the world's precious metals that are used in key components of modern computing devices, yet enjoys very little of the benefits of the technology its precious metals allow for -- see VICE"

This is pure Trump.

"You know, not many people know that most of the world's precious metals come from Africa. It's true!"

Yes, Mr. President, we all knew about Africa's problematical relationship with its natural resources. From oil in Nigeria to rubber in the Congo, Africa has had & continues to have social problems related to their natural resources. We don't need to see VICE to learn about that. It's nice that you finally got up to speed though, sir.
