This is hardly a scapegoat, SolRo. He literally had about ten different people TELL HIM this kid was a problem and they did absolutely nothing under his watch. Now he's blaming everyone else.

Yes, the NRA is terrible but this guy FUCKED UP MAJORLY at his job and he deserves to be called out for it. He literally went with the "boys will be boys" level of thinking before shit really exploded and so he is at fault. THIS IS HIS FAULT.

He absolutely bears a large share of the responsibility, but the scapegoating is trying to claim he's the sole person (other than the gunman) responsible for this tragedy. Which is definitely what certain right-wing groups are desperately trying to find SOMEONE to fill the position thereof, so that guns and gun laws don't wind up bearing any of the responsibility.

It's the attempt to disproportionately divide up the blame so that guns and gun laws aren't mentioned that's the problem here, not giving this douchebag the share of the blame he richly deserves.

That's how scapegoating tends to work, by definition.

Well, "scapegoating" often works by pointing the finger r at someone who's low down on the totem pole in order to save the reputation & careers of people at the top.

In this case, the sheriff kinda *is* the guy at the top, in one sense.

But yeah.... focusing on this guy is a sucker's game. Yes, he deserves to shown contempt. But the actions of one Florida sheriff aren't worth getting worked up over. It's the people who created this system that are the real villains.

Look.... law enforcement should be society's *last* line of defense. If a situation gets to them, usually someone further up the chain fucked up.

Think some of you are ignoring that the law did not allow him to take away someone’s guns for being an unstable mess and unspecified potential threat. This is how the NRA has set up gun laws in the country.
