Yep. Pretty much.

Oh thank God, it had been five whole seconds since someone on the internet pointed out that the Simpsons isn't good anymore. I'd almost forgotten.

The Simpsons still earns good 18-to-49 demo ratings - around 1.75 per season, on average. Of COURSE The Simpsons is part of the status quo now - the only Fox scripted show in 2017-18 that performs better in the 18-to-49 demo is Empire, and The Simpsons is ubiquitous in syndication and licensing. The only thing that'll stop The Simpsons now is too many of the primary castmembers either leaving or dying.
|
Xenocide - 2018-03-21 Who knows what adventures The Simpsons will have between now and when the show becomes unprofitable?
|
BHWW - 2018-03-21 The Simpsons continued airing of new episodes is mostly due to inertia at this point - the show has become background noise that people take for granted when they bother to pay attention to it.

How can a show stay fresh after 28 seasons?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-03-21
This is way too long. Most of the video is him repeating himself or saying nothing of substance that we dont already know. Also how he enunciates is creepy + the writing style is that of an undergrad humanities essay; gotta hit that word count!

Nominal - 2018-03-21 "Most of the original writers left. Phil Hartman died. The end."
He points to Lisa centric episodes as a core to the golden years? yeesh

|
Nominal - 2018-03-21 Not just the Lisa episodes, but all the "heart" episodes he pointed out were shit. Nobody looks back fondly at "Bart gets a 'F'", "Moaning Lisa", or "Lisa's Substitute". All of those were 2nd season and the show didn't really take off until the 3rd season where they ditched that shit and focused on actually being funny. Those kind of episodes was when the show was closest to being the warm fuzzy sitcom that it was supposed to mock.
|
Xenocide - 2018-03-21 You're right about the other two, but I'd say Moaning Lisa is one of the first episodes that really attacks warm fuzzy sitcoms head-on.
A standard sitcom plot would be: "Character is depressed. After a heartwarming talk with an adult and/or authority figure, she figures out why she was sad and fixes the problem. The end."
Moaning Lisa's plot is: "Lisa is depressed. All the adults and authority figures in her life either make no effort to help her or give terrible advice. Her sadness isn't caused by one simple problem but a million small ones, most of which she is powerless to do anything about. So she writes a song about it, which solves nothing but at least gives her a momentary distraction. The end."
It's also probably the first Simpsons episode to tackle the show's biggest theme: That most people in authority have no idea what they're doing.
