I went to see it, partially because it's the only film I've ever heard of to be set in my city, but more so out of sheer morbid curiosity to see how bad it was and honestly...I was disappointed that I wasn't more disappointed. Spielberg actually managed to turn it into an okay film. Not a good one mind you, but the book is so fucking horrid that I'm amazed anyone with any sort of reputation in Hollywood signed on to a movie adaptation of it, much less Spielberg of all people.
The "REFERENCES!" aspect of it isn't nearly as prevalent in the film as it was in the book either. They're there, but it's all background noise. Aside of the Iron Giant nothing is there for more than a split second as fanboy nostalgia wank fodder if someone who knows what it is happens to see it.
Also the message at the end is basically "ESCAPISM IS BAAAAAAAAD!" which is kind of weird when the preceding two hours revolved around a bunch of video game nostalgia and video game players trying to save their video game.

Watching this review, there's a part that sums it up perfectly: when Mike's talking about the scene from the novel (omitted from the movie) about how the.. uhh.. fuck it I'll just say METAVERSE.. offers up free public education and all these social services because IRL World's pretty much boned. It's Dystopia 101, but most always makes for an interesting discussion. But instead of going there, the school "teaches" everyone about how to play fucking "Joust." But then maybe THAT'S the point, that IRL World's so boned that History Pre-1977 was mysteriously lost, so we really do have nothing more than these new post-Joseph Campbell archetyypes. I dunno, someone get a decent cam rip and I'll watch it.

I was hoping Otherland would get an adaptation at some point, but I guess it's a little too long and 3dgy for a one film mass appeal adaptation.
Then again I last read Otherland in Jr High and what the fuck does anyone know in Jr High.

I read the book. It's fun, forgettable, disposable popcorn pulp fiction.
There's also a clear line where it becomes profoundly embarrassing. For me that was the bit where, as Mike mentioned, the main character has to reenact WarGames. Not just dialogue, though. Oh no. He also has to mimic the movie's STAGE DIRECTION. So he's reciting what Matthew Broderick said and also moving and gesturing as Matthew Broderick did. Where was Matthew Broderick standing in the classroom? When was he supposed to follow this person? Was he sitting or standing at NORAD and where and which?
I did not think it was possible to have a nerdboner that hard until I read RPO. And as much as it made me blush and look over my shoulder, I would love to see them try to adapt that kind of shit into a movie.
