Aw. He didn't talk about trade and economics. I was hoping he would so I could post from "The Great Illusion" a book written just prior to WW1 that most people think argued a war in Europe was impossible because of interconnected trade. (It didn't, it just argued you couldn't profit out of such a war).

The points in the video are valid. Though the interesting thing is that America in particular, and the West in general have been working very very hard to undermine points 2 and 3.

Missile Defence can be understood as an attempt to make nuclear weapons usable. Deterrence only works if the opponent can hit you back, and a missile defence shield that functions as well as the people who get paid to build it claim would prevent that. This why Russia unveiled all those new nuclear delivery mechanisms recently and why the ABM system has been a constant source of upset for them. Given how weak Russia is compared to NATO it's not going to let nuclear deterrence be undermined.

The concept of the responsibility to protect has been used to undermine national sovereignty and open the door to proxy warfare which can then be escalated to military interventions. Provide weapons in a time of civil unrest, start a war, invoke crimes against humanity, bomb until everything's better.

they do love that 'asterisk Crimea' they keep mentioning but left out the '*Isreal's slow conquest of Palestine' note. Because that one is okay to ignore.

GravidWithHate - 2018-05-06

Arguably that's covered by the 'since 1976' qualifier (though it's referring to Indonesia conquering East Timor); The West Bank and Gaza Strip has been under Israeli military control since the Six Day War in 1967.

SolRo - 2018-05-06

It's been occupied but not annexed.

It's a deliberate strategy (possibly from the start). It has always been illegal, but Israel plans to conquer as much of the territory as possible through illegal settlements and then claim that territory if they're forced to negotiate (You're not going to kick out XXX,000 Jews are you, you anti-Semite!). Though their ideal outcome is just to ethnically cleanse the whole region as much as possible and then force a 'one state' solution when the number of non-Israelis is way too low to give them a voice in any votes.

GravidWithHate - 2018-05-06

Yes, but that's all down to what you're referring to with the word 'conquered'.

Why was this made? And if you had to make it, why didn't they make it good.

Sounds like Francis Fukuyama before he figured out he was totally wrong. War is a business and it ain't goin anywhere.

Small wars in backwaters are really profitable. Big wars on industrialized soil not so much.

I remember enjoying the novel "Market Forces" by grimdark writer Richard Morgan (more famous for the now-miniseries Altered Carbon): https://www.richardkmorgan.com/books/market-forces/ The main plot revolves around the military-industrial complex instigating "splendid little wars" around the world for profit. I think the main dude is a good guy with a big dick who Does The Right Thing.

Caveat: I read this book a long time ago it's possible that it doesn't hold up.

Altered carbon is a great show.
