I heard about all this shit for the first time last week. What the fuck.

Urkel Forever - 2018-05-06

What I really want to know is what the TFL crew thinks of their progeny? Are they on board? Do they feel they've been ripped off?

And maybe more interesting: Is there an actual descent from TFL to Incel? Or has the TFL/Incel ideology spawned multiple times independently? And if so, what does that say about our society?

SolRo - 2018-05-06

Given the self-absorption, I'm more than certain that both camps think of themselves as perfect individual snowflakes born outside of anyone else's influence. They are unique victims and no one else can take that away from them.

badideasinaction - 2018-05-06

I’m sure it’s about the same opinion that the average Republican has about the alt-right; public concern, private support.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-06

I dunno about that. TFL tends to just want sex, not to murder anyone.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-06

I dunno. Has anyone seen TFL Bill's wife lately?

Born in the RSR - 2018-05-07

C'mon! A big part of Bill's rants was this idea that there would come a "reckoning" and all the sluts would pay for their transgressions.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-07

"I can't get laid because women are bitches." It doesn't take a rocket scientist.

Ugh - 2018-05-07

tfl is like a dad joke compared to some of the shit incels are fantasizing about on their private post-reddit echo chamber

i know the whole government watchlist idea is generally not reality but in this case i'm really, really okay with the idea

StanleyPain - 2018-05-06

This fucking "movement" is so wrong and twisted it's difficult to put into words, but I know a few women who write for various blogs and sites, and holy shit if they so much as even MENTION any of this shit on social media, they get bombarded with the most cringey, pseudo-intellectual, m'lady bullshit from these people you can possibly imagine.

SolRo - 2018-05-06

sad part is that almost literally anyone can get laid. if you put yourself out there and attempt to interact with other people on a regular basis, you will eventually find someone willing to genitallay interface with you out of pity, low standards or fetishistic preference.

decoy - 2018-05-06

Look at Keith Raniere. That weirdo got laid like a motherfucker.

cognitivedissonance - 2018-05-06

The problem is they’ve gamified everything after decades of PUA jargon. They are obsessed with points and numbers, and they believe every man is due a 10 unless he has broken certain rules, which drop the 10 down. it’s about removing any humanity from the situation, training themselves to think sociopathically, and self-hatred.

badideasinaction - 2018-05-07

PUA is a magic feather - it's a trick to convince guys to ask every woman in the room and accept a bullshit psyc reason for why it didn't work so their ego doesn't get bruised and stop them from asking again. Nothing more. Problem is it kept their egos intact that they didn't have to not be shitheads to get any, and when they didn't, they externalized it. So we get idiot incels.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-06

I don't understand how this is news to most people. Haven't various news outlets done introductory pieces on the Manosphere? Granted I'm kind of immersed in feminist writers and bloggers, but if I realized how obscure MGTOWs and incels were, I would have been telling a lot more people about them as a warning.

Fun fact: among this fragmented subculture are also groups earnestly advocating for the decriminalization/legalizing of rape.

This was a good stand-up bit that managed to be very informative and critical about an awful thing.

SolRo - 2018-05-06

legal rape is literally as old as the bible,

Old_Zircon - 2018-05-07

Bullshit, SolRo

It's way older than the Bible.

StanleyPain - 2018-05-07

Because few people took them seriously until they started doing exactly what they said they would start doing: killing people. Now that we have multiple murders linked to this MRA bulllshit, the media is starting to realize that it's yet another white oppressed male bullshit domestic terrorist movement we need to worry about.

And I'm sure it doesn't help that some media, like NYT, are normalizing them and even supporting columns about how "Oh hey...what if we made a special class of women to be sex slaves to these fucktards?"

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-07

MRA is a valid movement. A lot of it revolves around custody battles now, or discussing female on male violence in court, which often gets laughed at. There are issues within MRA that need to be heard.

I think it's a HUGE mistake to conflate Incel with MRA. You wouldn't link them together anymore than you would link Scientology with UFO enthusiasts. Or Lorena Bobbitt with third wave feminism.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-07

Some MRAs have the lustre of a legit movement, but if you look past the surface you'll notice it's just more of the same toxic masculinity. In one blog post they'll say that sexual assault of men/boys by women is a real huge problem, but then they make jokes about how if they were teenagers they'd want to be assaulted by their hot teacher.

Honestly modern feminism (not the 2nd-wave stuff) has more to offer for "men's rights" than MRAs. Feminists will argue for parternal leave (i.e. shared leave between any two parents), fair custody for dads (i.e. don't leave child-rearing entirely to women), etc. MRAs will never sign on however because they actively cultivate misogyny and feminism "is cancer" to them.

You People Are Idiots - 2018-05-07

'MRA is a valid movement'''''''

fuckin lolno it aint
for all that they choose causes that exist
they dont give a fuck about fixing it or dialog
they just want to take a embittered swing at all teh wimmin
that ever rejected them and the '''feminist'''''' they think is the reason they fail
useless fuckin skinbags, every one of em
not a one of them who gives a fuck abuot men's rights
over their autism about all the pussy they never got
or the kid that got took away becuz they were fuckin
just as useless as parents

SolRo - 2018-05-07

MRA is to solving the (very, very few) injustices facing men as the Crips and Bloods are to solving racial inequality.

Old_Zircon - 2018-05-06

I actually thought this was at least as old as TFL and evolved concurrently, but then it seems like all of the discussion and analysis and criticism of this stuff coming out lately starts the timeline about a decade late.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-06

I don't know what this has to do with Transport For London.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-07

I've heard the buses there are just murder.

BHWW - 2018-05-06

Last week no one knew what an incel was. Now they are the single greatest threat to modern civilization, a terrorist force that threatens to sweep across the land, resulting in a moral panic where thinkpiece writers go out of their way to accuse as many people as possible of being hideous virgin subhumans deserving of a purge, it has been ridiculous. A lot of the professional coverage by alleged journalists is fascinating in how jaw-droppingly boring and lazy it is, just reaching into the buzzword chumbucket and squeezing out some word juice; the reportage is on "the hacker known as 4chan" or "Anonymous the Internet Hate Machine" levels of quality research.

One cannot simply say "these people have terrible ideas and a small percentage of them might behave violently as a result" no, instead we have to go around calling everyone with bad opinions "terrorists".

Jeffries here is not much better "HEY I GOTTA GET THE HOT TAKE ON THIS 'INCEL' BUSINESS".

Fairest coverage in the incel issue actually goes to The Daily Beast. I'm dumbfounded.

Xenocide - 2018-05-06

Pretty sure the reason they're being called terrorists is because this whole focus began when an incel killed ten people last week. And the others are either singing his praises or going, "Yeah, what he did was bad, but seriously women should be treated like cattle and the government should let me rape them."

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-06

It's just not fair that people associate Incels with mass murder, and not for their important contribution to the restoration of America's historical sites.

Actually, though, we first starting hearing about incels after the Eliot Rodger shooting spree.

Two Jar Slave - 2018-05-06

I didn't watch this video, but one of these incels murdered ten people in my city last week, apparently for incel reasons.

garcet71283 - 2018-05-06

Total aside: Jim Jeffries sure is cribbing from the Lewis Black style these days.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-07

I'm going to try to steer clear of launching into my thesis, but I think feminism needs to start addressing the conflicts between women and the men who would fuck them as dysfunction, rather than oppression. For a whole lot of time, a whole lot of men simply haven't been given a clue about how to have a relationship with a real woman. I don't know of very much in our mass culture that really helps men with that,

What we do learn is that sex is incredibly important and wonderful. Anyone remember the video of Eliot Rodger watching a young couple in the park, and speculating that their sex life, must "heaven". You know, Eliot, if you'd ever had sex, you might realize that "heaven" was overselling it a little.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-07

What I would add is that being clueless about women is not fun for men.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-07

Men are also oppressed by patriarchy. If you haven't read it, "The Gender Knot" is a very thorough introduction to feminism for men by a man. A REAL MAN WITH A MOUSTACHE WHO HAS SEX ALL THE TIME NO BIG DEAL.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-07

For another perspective, a good book by a feminist and a woman about men being fucked over by sexist mythology is Susan Faludi's STIFFED.

When i say it's a good book, I confess I still haven't read the whole thing. It's on my list, but there's a really fascinating excerpt available for free in the Google Play Books App, which, if you've never looked, is f filled with (perhaps quite literally) a million free excepts to a million books.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2018-05-07

I didn't love "Backlash" but read "Stiffed" years ago and thought it was super. A very positive, grounded take on what it means to be a man. It's the sort of thing I'd give a nineteen year kid just in the hope that he might get something out of it.

Accidie - 2018-05-07

I never thought this site, this odd hobby of watching crazy people online could have become so shockingly mainstream relevant in my life.
the past 5 years have been spiraling out of control.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2018-05-07

I felt the same way after Vox Day, longtime super-troll and weird-internet fixation, suddenly got into national publications thanks to that dust-up at those science fiction conventions where a lot of mankids who called themselves the "sad puppies" got upset that the prizes seemed to be going to novels that were all literary and dealt with the Big Questions, instead of "Manly Spaceman Bones Sexy Space Lady Part 34734353." The dude is so obviously crazy and then he hit the friggin' big time. It's essentially wrong.

Old_Zircon - 2018-05-07

I felt this way when I saw Jonah Falcon on TV around 2007.

Old_Zircon - 2018-05-07

If you think back to the Livejournal and message board diaspora of the MPD TOTALLY EXISTS AND I HAVE IT BAD WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET MY 20 ALTERNATE PERSONALITIES? community back in the Bush years, that's our entire social reality now.

Anyone who didn't see this shit coming like a train bearing down on you while your foot is caught in the switch just wasn't paying attention to the Internet 20 years ago, because it was utterly obvious that shit was going to get ugly when the people who were born into the late 90s Internet grew up.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-07

I just want to say that Vox Day is a fucking moron and the fact that he has to beg (yes, beg) the alt right to buy his drek is pathetic. If you're an author, people should read your fiction because it's genuinely good, not buy it out of spite because it doesn't have minorities in it. I visited his blog once and it was so poorly written it was embarrassing.

Born in the RSR - 2018-05-07

Thanks for making me google that tool, you guys! I really needed those neurons branded with the knowledge of that shit eater's existence.

*bleh*!

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2018-05-08

Oh, RSR, you're welcome. I feel like the POE fairy, sprinkling weird internet dust everywhere I go.

Gmork - 2018-05-07

Here I am, King Gampo and shit. Where's the timeline where I never got my groove back and I became one of these fuckers?

Sudan no1 - 2018-05-11

Five and faved for the Tosh joke.
