I had no idea John Spencer was practically a Cramps tribute band.

Yeah, but Lux owes a lot to The Gun Club's Jeffrey Lee Pierce in the same way, including his guitarist, who joined up with The Cramps after Pierce wrote a love-song to Ivy.

To be fair the Cramps were already doing this at least a year before The Gun Club formed, although obviously there was mutual influence.

well, I have new (to me) music to look up. Thanks POE!

whoops! :) I always liked The Cramps a lot more TBH; if Mark Lanegan tells you you're doing too many drugs, you're doing too many drugs.

It's funny, I never heard of The Gun Club or heard anyone talk about them until 5 or 6 years ago, even though I've known tons of people who were in to all sorts of their peers since I was in 9th or 10th grade and started playing in bands. The person who turned me on to The Gun Club was a 60-somethig retired mailman from Cranston who was paying me to digitize some of the prize pieces from his collection of rare heavy rock LPs from the late 60s and early 70s. The Gun Club was one of his favorite bands of all time. Go figure.

I mean, in a way it makes sense because the actual BANDS in those scenes were usually pretty heavily inspired by underground 60s music (or even not so underground, The Ramones were practically a Beach Boys tribute band in terms of songwriting, they just played the songs faster with distortion and a different lyric and vocal style but they're absolutely drenched in Brian and Carl Wilson influence) but their FANS seem to lean more on the punk side of the late 70s generation gap.
