I like The Damned version better

I learned today that The Damned didn't actually record the famous cover of this, although they've covered it live a lot since then. The Damned were broken up at the time and the Jet Boy Jet Girl cover was actually Captain Sensible & the Softies, but it was a bonus track on The Damned's 1981 Best Of record so everyone including me, thought it was them. Captain Sensible was friends with Alan Ward, the songwriter and lead singer of the band Elton Motello, and learned the song from him.

Go figure.
