An incident happened in Cambridge where one of the 2 operators went outside through the airlock to perhaps make a phone call o smoke. It was at 3AM IIRC and the operator inside dozed off, meaning the one outside could not get back in. As a result they had to shut down for maybe 4 days while there was a perfunctory investigation and report.

In these few days they were offline I was riding down Mass Ave and noticed 2 guys coming out through the gate in the fence around the reactor's plot of land. and I spontaneously reflexively veered and leaped off my bike to ask if they worked there [etc,] an exuberant geek having been learning all this stuff --but even to just say hi, talk to these operators there whether they wanted to meet me or not-- I. made.. their. choice..--
...Every time I think about that I wonder how taken aback or surprised or amused and easily suspicious these two peoples were that some freak on a bicycle just homed in on them as they emerged out on the sidewalk, before they closed the chain-link gate after themselves, kind of crazy like I did, with a terrible DIY haircut I remember-- and wonder if they thought after that maybe I was trying to psych them out while generating content to write in a story for some blog, or as if possibly myself or other students at my less prestigious university were making fun of the lock-out incident. Somewhere at the very back of my mind I was aware it was of operative importance to these people presently. I assure myself it was no big deal and all on the level, a passing moment.

Other research reactors I know of are very low key, always sub-critical and are not a big installation with airlocks into a vacuum containment building with all its systems, test facilities and a control room/sci-fi command center. The MIT one looks perfect outside with its brick smokestack next to the dome which is painted sky-blue. The Lowell one is all metal, white.
