Wouldn't you just know it? Imagine the bad luck of innocently calling someone an ape publically and then having them turn out to be black!
But the plot thickens, like you knew it would. Here's a quote from her original apology.

How can you make a joke about someone's looks and not know they're black?
On one hand, I don't really approve of people losing their jobs for saying the wrong thing. Prejudice, in one form or another, is a human weakness, that is pretty close to universal, and making people pay the ultimate career price for accidentally letting their ugly side show is going to make it harder for people to really look at themselves.
On the other hand, fuck you, Roseanne. Even if your mean degrading personal attack was misunderstood, that doesn't make you an innocent victim.

Contrary to how it's often portrayed in the media, our judgements of people isn't a simple set of scales with "Good stuff" on one side and "bad stuff"on the other other. See, even if you fund tons of women's rights movements, you don't get to then rape women at will. (See: Harvey Feinstein) Similarly, if you feature the first gay kiss, you don't get to be a racist douchebag.
