competent sketch

All this has done is remind me to watch that footage of BOC performing live in Hollywood FL back in 1981.

The clip of them playing Veteran of the Psychic Wars is just, well:

Fun fact: THE Bruce Dickinson (not to be confused with the Iron Maiden frontman) is a real person, but he didn't produce (Don't Fear) the Reaper or any other hit singles. As of 2000, he was a mid-level employee at Columbia Records, mostly working on assembling compilations of old material.

When the sketch was being developed, SNL's writers sent an intern out to buy a copy of Agents of Fortune, the album where Reaper first appeared. Instead, the intern came back with a Best of Blue Oyster Cult CD which had Reaper on it. That compilation was produced by Bruce Dinkinson (the cock of the walk, baby!) but none of the actual songs were. But since Bruce had the top production credit on the CD, SNL's writers assumed he had produced all those hits, and they leaned into that assumption when writing the character.

Also, Christopher Walken should play a Batman villain again sometime. One of the famous ones, not just some rich guy who fires Catwoman.

But he can't be one of the normal ones. He needs to be something like Clock King or Calendar Man.

In a weird, accidental way that might have been the right move, because I'm listening to an original LP of Agents of Fortune for the first time in years right now and the cowbell/woodblock is actually mixed really low, you can barely hear it in most of the song and even in the famous part it's not loud at all. So it may have been Bruce Dinkinson's compilation mastering (and before that, the broadcast limiters that all the radio stations where the SNL writers probably heard the song were using) that actually brought it up in the mix to the point where it would even warrant parody. Unless the single version is a significantly different mix, I haven't heard that in years.

So that's interesting.

This really was a classic sketch. However, much like Monty Python, its perfection was marred by idiots over-referencing it.

simon666 - 2018-08-09

I came for an argument and all you're offering is abuse.

Anaxagoras - 2018-08-09

Stop that! Stop that! It's entirely too silly.

Get on with the next post, please.

Ersatz - 2018-08-10

Oh, you're no fun anymore.

Lemon curry?

garcet71283 - 2018-08-12

Ni!

I've heard theories that what is played on the track is not, in fact, cowbell. The going speculation is that it's actually woodblock (which it sounds way more like).
