I tried watching this movie. I left the theater when Leia did her magic space flight thing.

Xenocide - 2018-08-29

Yeah, that really killed the realism of this movie about outer space wizards who are friends with muppets.

SolRo - 2018-08-29

You have to have some serious nerd rage to walk out of a major sci-fi fantasy movie over “cannon” or “realism”.

Or are you just dork-peacocking to prove how alpha-geek you are?

duck&cover - 2018-08-29

She should have propelled herself with farts.

spikestoyiu - 2018-08-29

No you didn't

The Mothership - 2018-08-30

You're right spikestoyiu, but I did turn off Netflix.

Xenocide - 2018-08-29

A thousand Jar Jar Binks musicals would still be more tolerable than listening to fifty-eight goddamn minutes of someone rehashing twitter nerdbro talking points while doing a "wacky voice."

I assumed this video was from December, but nope, it was published today. So why is Youtube still whining about this movie nine goddamn months later? What's the endgame? Do they think that once they hit their 500 millionth Last Jedi complaint video, it'll activate some sort of Yoda space magic which will cause the billions of dollars Disney made off this film to disappear?

Bebido - 2018-08-29

I can't say I know for sure however I feel like red letter media has grown passed the whole star wars review. I imagine this is just for the constituents. To me the dude half-assed it or is just phoning it in. I mean those nerd podcast shows they do I thought was to make fun of people who delve uncomfortably deep in to a fantasy movie, right?

Also, who really gives a shit about star wars? Lucas sold it because he knew it was dead so might as well make that money from the sell. The people who complain about star wars dont matter to disney, its the people who just want to watch some shit to pass the time.

Gmork - 2018-08-29

Everyone who 1-stars RLM is a worthless cunt, end of discussion.

You People Are Idiots - 2018-08-29

hahaha

poorwill - 2018-08-29

Call me more names Gmork, I've been bad.

misterbuns - 2018-08-29

You get up every day and read the headlines of 2018 and this is what you are mad about. Star Wars.

Nominal - 2018-08-29

one star every movie review until 2020

cognitivedissonance - 2018-08-29

Disney was up against 30 years of weird possessive activity on behalf of the consumer, and George Lucas never lifted a finger. I remember the fad in the 00s for fake sacred texts about the "Jedi Path" that we'd be dealing with this until the next world war.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-08-29

I'm trying to think of another cinematic failure that's on the same scale as The Last Jedi, and honestly nothing's coming up. They're going to talk about this movie in film schools the way they talk about Napoleon's invasion of Russia in real schools.

At least Paul Fieg has someone to look down on in movie jail.

Xenocide - 2018-08-29

I believe that they will talk about this in film schools, but only because there's always going to be that one fat bearded kid who keeps arguing that Fight Club is the best movie ever made and then he does a big end of term report on "how SJW's ruined science fiction." Bullet point #1 will be "THEY LET A GIRL BE IN CHARGE OF THE STAR WAR."

Gmork - 2018-08-29

What a completely delusional non-sequitur response from xenocide.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-08-29

It's the only way he knows how to respond when something makes him angry.

cognitivedissonance - 2018-08-29

mom dad stop fighting

BHWW - 2018-08-29

Good too see Xenocide has gone into "TLJ backlash-backlash mode"

"O-o-o-o-only man-man-man-babies hate The Last Jedi, only stupid manbabies, that's all! There are no legitimate criticisms to be made because it's actually a good movie, only stupid 'nerdbros' raging against "SJWs" hate it! Something something toxic masculinity, something something clickbait nerd media site buzzwords"

poorwill - 2018-08-29

I don't like TLJ but I won't know if I should hate it until the next one (which I am not excited to see - itself pretty damning for TLJ). There were good things about it, and shit things about it but overall it left me feeling pretty cold and detached. Star Wars is confectionary, the material just can't really sustain poorly-thought-out efforts to mix up the formula cause the formula is already so thin. All Star Wars' depth is implied, not actual and it's better to keep it that way or the illusion is shattered.

Nikon - 2018-08-30

I'd say maybe Leonard Part 6 but even that fails to come close to TLJ in terms of cinema failure and wasted potential. In just a few movies Disney took one of the most valuable IPs in history and turned it into a loser.

If Disney really wants to know how to tell sequel stories set many years after movies released in the 70s and 80s, they should watch Cobra Kai and take some notes.

Nominal - 2018-08-30

The Star Wars prequels and Matrix sequels

Nikon - 2018-08-30

I respectfully disagree with you on part of that - the Star Wars prequels were clunky, sure, but the rise of Palpatine to power and the Clone Wars cartoon were exciting enough and the stories occurred without needing to ruin the legacy of the characters from 4-6. The prequels did their own thing and are fine on their own. They weren't enough to kill Star Wars.

Nominal - 2018-08-31

"The prequels did their own thing and are fine on their own."

wow

garcet71283 - 2018-08-29

Meh. I saw it twice and enjoyed it each time.

I liked burned out Vietnam vet Luke.

Adam Driver was really good.

The porgs were far from the worst kid-friendly thing put into a Star Wars movie to sell toys.

The humor felt like Disney shoehorning in the Marvel style but it was sporadic enough that it didn’t ruin things for me.

Pink haired lady and Asian lady plot device were forgettable and not worth getting angry about.

In all truth, this movie was closest to the Expanded Universe bullshit that the fans seem to hold so near and dear. Those books, comics and video games were not Shakespeare.

animegurl1000 - 2018-08-29

The only humor that was really cringeworthy for me was in the beginning when Poe calls the Empire and starts doing a "Jerky Boys"-style prank call routine. The whole thing seemed more suited for a Guardians of the Galaxy film.

Other than that, the jokes and humor were more or less your standard Star Wars fare.

spikestoyiu - 2018-08-29

Yo that was really bad. And it's so early in the movie that it had the unexpected result of setting the bar so low that the rest of the movie had no choice but to get better.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-08-29

Asian lady plot device actually held my interest. She was spunky and courageous and did unexpected things. I hated Hondo because even after she explained herself, I still didn't agree with her tactics and I totally sided with Poe. She could have rallied the troops and explained what she was doing, but I guess she feels that you should blindly follow your leaders even when it looks like they are going to get you all killed. She sucked so much.

betamaxed - 2018-08-29

I'll continue to not give a shit about their star war movies as long as Disney continues to not recognize Wilford Brimley and the Ewok made for T.V. movies as canon to the star wars universe.

Give me my adult aged Cindel movie you bastards.

Accidie - 2018-08-29

people on poetv arguing about nerd outrage is auto 5.

Old_Zircon - 2018-08-29

Yeah, I've been bored with RLM for a couple years and duidn't watch the video, but I'm enjoying the comment drama so far.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-08-29

Its really better if you don't watch the video.

poorwill - 2018-08-29

did *anyone* watch the video? lol

Scrimmjob - 2018-08-30

I watched the video, and passed out somewhere in the middle, I haven't seen the movie they're talking about, and I don't intend to, so I don't really have a pony in this fight.

Nikon - 2018-08-31

I watched the video and thought it was funny. I could have done without some of the gross humor though.

William Burns - 2018-08-29

Dann guys, Generations was like 15 years old when he reviewed it.

Nominal - 2018-08-29

Hey these are always fun!

Wait, gotta check in with my Twitter tribe to see if I'm still allowed to like this...and looks like RLM is personally responsible for the rise of Trump and neo nazism BLARG RAAARG ONE STAR PATHETIC ANGRY NERDS.

StanleyPain - 2018-08-29

I haven't watched this yet, but I gotta say the weird RLM hate-boner for Last Jedi is pretty creepy. Like, they cannot let this shit go. I didn't think Last Jedi was some grand masterpiece, but few movies in history, if ever, are deserving of the weirdly obsessive and endless level of vitriol these guys have for that movie.

William Burns - 2018-08-29

They've done one of these for every prequel and the last two sequels. It's not like this is something new they're doing.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-08-29

The critique is well-deserved, it's not vitriol. They even include some parts that were positive.

The character doing the review is a gross one, but that's not what you're complaining about. Maybe you should consider the difference between a hate-boner and critique.

StanleyPain - 2018-08-29

I'm not talking about *this* video...a Plinkett thing was expected. I'm talking about their Half in the Bag of it, the mentioning of it on so many other Half in the Bags and Best of the Worsts etc. They stab Last Jedi pretty much every opportunity to a weird degree, at least that's how it was for about 5-6 months.

Nominal - 2018-08-30

They were much more critical of the prequels where they made a decade long career of endlessly mocking George Lucas.

Where were the "hate boner" accusations then?

Born in the RSR - 2018-08-29

Stroke Guy.

Maggot Brain - 2018-08-29

These new SW movies are in the same vain as the recent Disney live action remakes of the past few years where they're trying to solve the non-problems of the early versions. Ever wonder how the villagers forgot about the magic Castle? It's not a problem anymore! Ever wonder how long space ship fuel lasts? It's not a problem anymore!

Chicken the Did - 2018-08-29

I actually liked the movie. I have never really managed to talk to anybody else who liked the movie. If I dare bring it up I get... This guy here in the video. So I will leave in one thing and get the Hell out of here.

Luke's shift in personality makes sense to me. Obi filled his head with the 'flowers and sunshine' narrative which omitted the Jedi tripping over their own shoelaces which Palpatine tied together. Or the atrocity of having a disposable clone army. Or training someone obviously mentally unstable out of selfishness. Or any number of awful, awful things the Jedi did. Fuck, Obi never explained Palpatine to Luke in ANY capacity. This could be justified by he just wanted Luke to smack down the Empire as fast as possible. But anyways Luke ages and he realizes all of this over time. Then he realizes the brat Han and Leia sent him to train is just evil. Nothing can 'fix' that. But for some reason Luke gave the little psycho training... For reasons... And now in addition of being psychotic he's LETHAL too. A case of "What the Hell was I thinking!?"

Maggot Brain - 2018-08-29

Luke's turn away from the Jedi makes total sense. One of the better parts of the prequels was showing that Jedi were creeps who were down with child slavery. However, this really doesn't come into play except for one line and the real reason why Luke quits is because Klyo caught Luke creeping out on him one night. Luke really didn't see all that bother by the fact that he got a bunch of kids killed.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-08-29

It was a perfectly satisfactory motion picture, featuring acting, writing, music, cinematography, special effects, and other entertainment and production values. What did you expect?

Maggot Brain - 2018-08-30

The one thing the movie should have done was start to bring the story to an conclusion; what were the Star Wars about? Bringing back democracy? Ending slavey? The cycle of libral societies? These movie used to be about the Skywalker family but now they’re not so what are they now? We got a little bit about the slavery narrative but it was only very briefly and was the worst part of the movie because it was a child actor reacting to a cgi dog-horse.

Just have the knights of ren be Kylo’s slave army of force users and he wants Rey to come and train them.

I’m ganna go work on my fan fiction now

Nominal - 2018-08-29

Man, the levels of projection going on here with the perpetually outraged usual suspects accusing this well presented movie critique as “rage”. It’s like watching Christians flip out when people pointed out what a crap fest Passion of the Christ was. Only atheist heathens could hate Passion and only misogynist racists could hate Last Jedi.

I have no clue why you guys haven’t migrated over to Bo News yet. It’s nothing but like minded souls who would agree with you all day long.

Two Jar Slave - 2018-08-29

Burned out, disillusioned Luke was a fine idea. It just wasn't done well in the movie. Kinda fell flat and didn't add up to anything.

Like, if British Girl had turned to the dark side after leaving Luke's island then his cynicism would be to blame, and that could have set up something interesting for both of them.

Instead, she didn't turn and Luke died because... gramps overexerted himself making a hologram and died sitting on a bench halfway across the galaxy. Whoop dee doo.

Honestly though, I prefer what we got to seeing a 60 year old Mark Hamill being forced to recapture the idealistic youthfulness that was original Luke'e character. That's basically what Abrams did to Harrison Ford, and it was even worse.

Stats for Plinkett tho.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-08-29

I'm old enough to remember when projection was a psychological term, and not just a lazy way to flip an internet argument.

Ilm projecting that if I posted a star wars review Mr Plinket wouldn't bother to watch it. either.

bawbag - 2018-08-29

Bubblegum movies for kids and their insufferable nerd boomer parents.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-08-29

040 I don't care.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2018-08-29

the 'tards on twitter got real mad at this one all of a sudden

BHWW - 2018-08-29

Like this gem. From @BuddyBoyBaxter

"Fuck it, here we go.

1. Straight up, RLM is the embodiment of how much cishet white males can ruin the fun of cinephilia. As long as you're relentlessly negative, absurd but not funny, use shitty rhetoric, and pepper in toxic jokes (body-shaming, rape, etc.) you're golden."

and it just goes on and on like that.

Nominal - 2018-08-30

Think of how much better the internet, politics, and society in general would be off if we had nuked Twitter from orbit 5 years ago.

Nominal - 2018-08-30

Someone explain to me how Twitter even became a thing. Something looked at Youtube and thought the best part was the comments and how much better it'd be without the videos?

garcet71283 - 2018-08-30

Someone one day was like “what if life had a comment box?”

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-08-30

Before the Trump Era, there was still a point to defending Twitter. Now I'll tell you why I've liked it in the past without necessarily suggesting that this justifies the sheer horror.

Twitter is a nice way for famous people to communicate with nonfamous people. You can send a comment to a famous person, and the famoius person, the famous person can "like" your comment, and it counts as communication, without taking up the famous person's day. Or they can even drop you a line or two.

Famous people who have communicated in this way with me include: Ken Jeong, Jeffrey Tambor, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Mo Rocco, and Rainn Wilson. The most famous person to ever retweet me was Christopher Nolan, or maybe Boxxy. The most famous person to follow me on Twitter (and I am quite proud of this) is Richard M. Stallman.

Maggot Brain - 2018-08-30

I blame the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Nominal - 2018-08-31

Didn't Livejournal have the life as a comment box need filled? I guess Twitter is more like someone looked at Livejournal and thought it needed more restrictions, and somehow that became the dominate social media platform?

Everything went to shit soon after all the major news outlets started reporting tweets as national headlines.

exy - 2018-08-31

Psst - Twitter took off because it bridged the gap between Internet dawdling and texting.

PS - I thought this video offered a competent critique.

Hazelnut - 2018-08-30

RLM is really funny and I thought the last three minutes of this video were bittersweet.

Nominal - 2018-08-31

Yup. Some really insightful points on narrative too. The whole "tone pacing" comparison between Empire Strikes Back and TLJ was indeed something I didn't notice at first, but my brain did.
