According to family on facebook, Terry died a few days ago.

I thought he was better known around here, but crash course: he was a crazy guy who made a bizarre, wholly incomprehensible operating system called LoseTHOS in machine language which he then evolved into TempleOS; a fever dream of religious/occult/conspiracy beliefs merged into an operating system that only functioned on older computers. After being discovered by a wider audience when TempleOS was actually "reviewed" by a serious YouTube channel that talks about software, he started his own channel and made hundreds of videos over the last few years revealing him as a pretty disturbed, mentally ill person who was paranoid and massively racist. He was prime old-school POE-Red material. I don't know how he became homeless, but the impression I get from his family facebook is that, like a lot of these types, he refused help and moved around a lot because his delusions about being hunted by the CIA or whatever.
I didn't post this because I'm sad or anything or that I think you all should be sad (the guy was probably potentially dangerous based on the videos he made where he publicly harassed people and used ethnic slurs), but just as a tip of the hat to a POE personality. I am sad at the pathetic and horrific low-bar level this country has at helping people who are mentally ill, though.
He deleted all of the videos off his channel not that long ago (except for this one and a couple others), but there are mirrors of a lot of his stuff.

Eh, he did a lot of horrible shit. That is obvious. However I get the impression in his last video the realization came crashing down on the guy that other humans were forever going to want him to go --------> that way as far out into left field as possible until they could feel he was at a safe and comfortable distance. Which is understandable considering his habit of getting aggressive with people and the whole racist thing. But shitty person or not the despair in his eyes is genuine. That's what gets me. The man finally becomes self-aware that there is a 'radioactive cloud' swirling around him that makes him a perceived threat. While at the same time his mental illness clouds any real road map for blowing said cloud away.

There really should have been some kind of mental healthcare apparatus intervening somewhere, somehow. Because maybe he really could have gotten some help and turned himself around.

I'd never heard of this guy, so I looked him up.

I don't quite understand people's reactions to him. His passing seems to be genuinely mourned, but from what I can tell he hadn't really accomplished anything and he was kinda nuts. On the Internet, those kinds of people are usually either the butts of mean-spirited jokes (see Chris-Chan) or they're the recipients of well-wishers' help. This guy was neither? He just seemed to.... be. And then he died, and people are sad about it?

Clue me in.... why were people attached to Terry Davis? Or is this some broad joke that I'm not getting?

kingofthenothing - 2018-09-02

This is the first I've heard of him.

I don't know anything anymore anyhow. I'm a mid-30's fuddy duddy. This whole world doesn't make any sense. I never could forsee a world where people made gobs of cash just playing video games competitively, or a world where people would have favorite Youtubers instead of favorite TV shows, and most of those Youtubers would have exaggerated expressions and clickbait titles on the preload, and still get millions of subscribers.

I also thought Bitcoin was going to be some flash in the pan garbage and easily get hacked and that'd be the end of it. There are comments on this very site, on old videos, where I've said about as much.

Up is down. Night is day. The world is too absurd for me and I still have at least half my life left, I hope.

Chancho - 2018-09-02

He was totally nuts, very racist and wrote TempleOS.

boner - 2018-09-02

I think what I found interesting was you had a guy codifying his mental illness into an operating system. You can see a bit of how his mind worked.

badideasinaction - 2018-09-02

I feel like he's Chris-Chan for programmer nerds, with a bonus of him saying racist stuff for right-wing lols. Sad really

Bisekrankas - 2018-09-07

Not having accomplished anything? Writing a full operating system from scratch all by yourself is not an accomplishment?

Anaxagoras - 2018-09-07

Yeah, fair enough. That probably is an accomplishment. I say "probably" because I'm not sure how robust TempleOS is, nor how many services it provides. After all, I could code something that could technically be classified as an OS in a couple months, but it would be be really crappy.

But yeah, looking at the high level description of TempleOS, it seems fairly substantial.... if a bit limited and "quirky".

Chicken the Did - 2018-09-02

As a joke I wanted to try and install Temple OS on an old X-Box console. Apparently Temple OS only works with very specific, old processors. I'd heard I could VM it though.

exy - 2018-09-02

CIA finally caught up with you, Terry. At least you didn't have a chance to hurt anybody first.

Meerkat - 2018-09-02

In the grand scheme of the universe, we are all just bizarre little persons who walk back and forth.

fedex - 2018-09-03

Was this guy worth any of this thread? I think not

Anaxagoras - 2018-09-06

You're probably right, but I'm glad that this video was submitted anyways. The very idea of a programming language & and and OS that reflects someone's mental illness is really interesting to me. (I work as a programmer)

You People Are Idiots - 2018-09-07

apparently he ate a train
