When people talk about how NBC mistreated Conan OBrian, I'm not saying they're wrong, but how many remember how someone at NBC decided to take a Writer for the Simpsons who'd had a couple of SNL walkons and give him the slot that had made David Letterman a legend NOBODY knew who Conan O'Brien was.

I think this may have run on the same night when Letterman had his first Show on CBS. GodDAMN that was a long time ago!.

Conan O'Brien also had Lookwell. At least SOMEONE at NBC knew Conan as "he wrote that pilot Adam West was in, Tartikoff liked it but FUCK HIM".

It's not like Letterman was a household name when NBC took his failed morning show and said "let's see if that works after Carson". Granted, Letterman and Jay Leno were frequent guest hosts for The Tonight Show, whereas O'Brien was the "we can't hook Garry Shandling or Dana Carvey to this thing, what the hell, SOMEONE" choice. God knows what Late Night could've been like if it didn't have people like Robert Smigel fucking around.

I remember a radio ad Conan did ahead of the premiere that leaned into this. "People are starting to recognize me on the street. Just yesterday a man pointed at me and said, 'hey look, it's that guy who doesn't deserve his own show.'"

Of course Conan grew to become a far better host than Jay ever was, so clearly someone at NBC was on to something.
