The invisible hand of the Free Market will intervene any day now.

Work sent me to Shenzhen for a week or two; it obliterated any desire to visit the rest of China.

China is the Republican wet dream; if you’re rich and praise the government you can get away with murder.

...and probably happening not just in Shenzhen, either. They're building instant Chicagos everywhere in China. In a city that work sends me to, it seems they're intent on razing all the old buildings to make way for the new. There's dust everywhere; obviously there's very little in the way of environmental/health/safety regulations

When I worked in construction, I was required to wear a respirator with P100 filters if I was hammer drilling into concrete. Some of the bigger general contractors were also requiring no beards so respirators could fit correctly. Most local construction companies take the threat of silicosis seriously.

Wish the auto repair industry took it even half that seriously.

In my experience, it's really hit or miss in construction. Some contractors, and some customers even, take it very seriously and provide proper respirators, vacuums, etc. At my current contractor, the equipment is available but no one cares if you actually use it. At my last contractor, they were pretty surprised when I asked for a respirator before I cut some concrete. They had to grab one from home depot.
