Back in my day we'd brag about how little we paid for clothes.

I got the jacket I'm wearing today at a place you buy thrift store reject clothes by weight.

Parents with disposable income due to a balanced economy and strong social welfare systems?

"The economy of Denmark is known for its government welfare measures, an equal distribution of income and a high standard of living. ... In 2014, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Denmark was $342B and its GDP per capita was $45.5k.Apr 25, 2017"

Ye, Denmark has been one of the most socialist governments in the EU for decades* And also a developed, reasonably wealthy nation.
So, most people are 'middle class', which is pretty rich by normal standards.

They have very high taxes and amazing public healthcare, schools, transportation, recycling, green energy etc, and often come up at the top of global happiness and quality of life measures. They're basically the good example of how industrialized societies should work.

*That has actually been changing in last few years, tho, but that is not relevant.

It is the correct way to run an industrialized society, but from the point of view of a muck-savage like me, it does kind of seem like an entire country of smug rich decadence..
They seem to be really into punky and counter culture type aesthetics, y'know skateboarding, warehouse raves, graffiti art, crusties smoking loads of weed, motorbikes, tattoos. etc..
But, in *no way* embodying any of the values of counter-culture. Like, they will get a purpose built 'underground rave centre' built for them by the government.. Its all a bit cringey.
I think Denmark is probably the only country I've ever felt like a 'hard' neer do well from the wrong side of the tracks in.
