MacGyver Style Bomb - 2019-02-10

Midway Games, everybody.

garcet71283 - 2019-02-10

The Safeway down the road from my parents house had one of these cabinets.

If you kicked the coin hopper just right, it would drop quarters into the coin return.

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

My first apartment had a pay washer that did that, and the owners didn't empty it often enough so sometimes you actually HAD to do that to even use it, because there wasn't enough space in the hopper to fit any more quarters, so if you wanted to wash your clothes you had to shake the machine until some quarters fell out of the bottom and then put them back in. One of my roommates made about $30 shaking that thing one time. Most of us would just kind of jiggle it a bit but she actually tilted it until it was almost ready to fall over and the let it drop back down hard. Only took one or two times to get a couple handfuls of quarters out.

Scrimmjob - 2019-02-10

I've seen games so full of quarters that they pile up into the coin mech, usually that is a few inch drop at least from the coin box, in a washer or dryer that shit is a little more compact, so it's probably way easier to happen there.

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

Most I ever got from it was around $2.50.

cognitivedissonance - 2019-02-10

This show had a cartoon, only the NARCs drove Bigfoot the Monster Truck and hung with Qwirk the tomato.

Scrimmjob - 2019-02-10

Also Fabio from the Iron Sword box was there.

HIGHEST NARCS

poorwill - 2019-02-10

the final boss is amazing. it vomits tongues at you. one of my favourite bad games.

Nominal - 2019-02-11

"Bosses that kept exploding until they turned into a giant robot head vomiting tongues at you" was a Midway stable back then (Smash TV, then another Smash TVish game I can't remember).

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

I thought even people who weren't born yet remembered NARC.

I beat this a few times but only in MAME. In the arcade (by "arcade" I mean the sub shop near the train station that had it for a while before it got Revolution X) it ate way too many quarters, I don't think I ever beat the first level.

Scrimmjob - 2019-02-10

Narc I played a few times in the arcade, but Revolution X I spent a fortune on! You gotta save Aerosmith dude, from the sexy fascist!!!!

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

Me and the drummer in my band used to play Revolution X but we never got very far because once we got to the level where Aerosmith is on stage we'd try to kill them instead.

I always preferred Narc but I've never been a rail shooter fan (although they're a lot of fun to watch).

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

Anyhow, this submission was the second time this week alone that Narc has come up in my life.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2019-02-10

This game is an utterly bananas hyperkinetic sleazefest. Kill dealers and shady-looking dudes that might be flashers! Get hookers to moan at you! Snatch up stacks of cash! Watch out for the hypodermics! Graphics that sort of look like FMV, player sprites that look like budget Robocop. The Pixies covered the theme song.

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

I always loved that they put the marijuana level at the end, because it's so much worse than heroin and crack and PCP and porn-crazed murder clowns.

Also the machine gun hippies.

Killer Joe - 2019-02-10

I enjoy the irony that the creators were undoubtedly high as fuck when developing the scenario and enemies.

OxygenThief - 2019-02-10

Graphics and art style still look great

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

I remember a very brief but intense Mortal Kombat style controversy over the gore in this game, and I'm pretty sure it was the first major video game violence controversy and may have gotten it banned in some places.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2019-02-10

At the time it looked amazing, but I think its aged *very* poorly, and looks crap.
At the time they were technically ahead, with high color, high res sprites, but art design wise its quite shitty, It seems like the art is taken from photos (beiung able to digitally scan in art from photos also being a big technical advantage at the time)
The art looks like it was scanned from different sources, there no cohesion, ie;
the sky is an abstract solid color void,
the characters and backgrounds look like they are traced over scanned photos,
the projectiles are glowing lines like from a totally different game like asteroids
The explosions are these dark blobs also with a very different visual style.

Also
There are very few frames of animation throughout.

I think a games with more primitive graphics but better art direction have aged much much much better than the likes of this. Eg. Pacman, mario bros etc.

Old_Zircon - 2019-02-10

Oh I agree, this game is terrible but it was one of the first (relatively) high resolution arcade games around my area, one of the first with digitized sound, one of the first with 90s-style XTREME violence (but still in the 80s) and an air of controversy, so it was a winner back in 5th grade or whenever.

garcet71283 - 2019-02-10

Oh wow, I had no idea the game came out in 1988. When I played it, it was well into the 90s and Mortal Kombat was already on the scene. I had no clue it predates it by a longshot.

poorwill - 2019-02-11

apparently you can actually 1cc it and there are lots of videos on youtube demonstrating how - i just thought it was a cheap piece of shit
