My brother in law had an uncle in a wheelchair for life because he fell off the porch which had no railings when his dad opened the door and another one that died in childhood because he fell from the loft in a barn.

Childhood mortality was not as big a deal back then. Maybe that's why older voters don't really twig on childhood mortality as a measure of USA #1 WOOHOO SUCK IT YURP

Oh also that was in Canada so it's not like it's a US only thing. I think there were just a lot more childhood deaths back then, not that parents just shrugged when their kids got snuffed.

As an addendum when I was a kid we used to go rafting in the toxic waste pond behind a chemical plant and our parents didn't stop us. At all. They didn't even suggest it was not a good idea. My mom would complain if I came home with boots full of sludge and tracked it on the carpet or if she had to wash my pants because they smelled funny but that's about it.

Low child mortality is a recent phenomenon and the jury's still very much out on how well it's going to work out for us in the long run.

As the resident east-yurp-ean, i need to chime in. Everything that John said applies perfectly to what I grew up with in 90s Romania.

In fact I was just talking about this with a friend and we weren't sure what "measles" translated to in our language, when we found out it was sort of weird. On the one hand it's something we saw so much of as children we figured it had to me completely innocuous, on the other the idea that you could die from something we found so (seemingly) innocuous made us question previous generation's judgement.

BTW: I never got measles, most other people from my generation don't believe me that I never got it, they think I was too young to remember getting it, i need to check with the folks, but im 99% sure i never had that or mumps.
