One of their better reviews.

Nominal - 2019-03-13

How are the Avengers and the other established MCU cast going to rally back and defeat Thanos?

Introduce a brand new overpowered generic Superman character who's suddenly the most important retcon ever!

oh.....

.......ooooooh

Xenocide - 2019-03-13

Yes, a brand new character...who first appeared in the comics in 1968. And who's had those Superman-level powers since the mid-70's and has been a consistent presence at Marvel ever since.

Oh man, she's barely had 51 years to establish herself, she really came out of nowhere.

William Burns - 2019-03-13

I think the point is that she's been retconned into THIS series, the Disney Marvel franchise, as a superpowered diety that has been around and is integral to the plot but that we never see and nobody ever mentions.

I am not the target audience so disregard my opinion.

Maggot Brain - 2019-03-13

So after 51 years she's best known for getting her powers stolen by at better character and being a fascist, right? I guess little Nazi girls need somebody to look up to, it's been like, ten years since Prussian Blue broke up.

misterbuns - 2019-03-13

The avenger defeat thanks by collecting parallel universe avengers from alternate dimensions, and yes the ultra powerful capt. marvel helps.

If any of this sounds fantastic or improvised perhaps you have never read comic books.

misterbuns - 2019-03-13

Oh man that comment sounds like i am having a stroke.

Xenocide - 2019-03-13

Nominal specifically called her a brand new character, which she's not. And it's a bit late to be complaining about retcons in the MCU now given that they've been shoving those in since at least the first Avengers movie. Hell, the entire plot of Winter Soldier is a retcon and that's Marvel's best movie. It's no big deal.

Ugh - 2019-03-13

i agree that the mcu should play with expectations, but man alive am i not excited by the idea of a carol danvers movie

i'd probably go see a moonstone movie though

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-03-13

I think they really hit the nail on the head when they described the problem with this movie as a lack of decision regarding what direction to take the character. I wish they had spent more time with the writing and rounded her character out better rather than tried to use feminism and girl power to make up for a lack of effort. They have gone to such great lengths with most of the MCU so it's weird that they just sort of stopped short with this movie.

It's like they were afraid to give her character too much character. As if they needed to have a strong female lead so badly they couldn't trust that a strong female character could have a well rounded personality or overall story arch.

I don't understand why anyone downvoted this. This is really well done for Half in the Bag and they called out the equal mundanity of much of the response of the internet along with Bree Larson's vacuous comments as both being problematic. These guys are not political and they are really very fair in every movie review I've ever seen them do, to the point where I respect them more than most movie critics.

Nominal - 2019-03-14

I'm talking about the movies, NERD.

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-14

>>I don't understand why anyone downvoted this.

Hipsters gotta hip. RLM has broad appeal, so it must be BAAAAAAD.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-17

Okay, having been an actual comic book reading kid on 1968, I think that was a different Captain Marvel. Look it up.

Nominal, I honestly think a character who has a history with the comics doesn't qualify as a "brand new character"

I stopped reading comics after the cover price hit a dollar and Carol Danvers is unfamiliar to me. What I know from the trailer, and from the post credit scene from Infinity Wars, is that she is involved with Nick Fury.and SHIELD, so it makes sense that no one has been talking about her. Fury is no chatty Cathy.

Am I excited? Optimistic. I can only think of a handful of MCU movies that didn't just blow me away, and they were all pre AVENGERS.

Nikon - 2019-03-13

Imma hard pass on this one. Good review though.

Scrimmjob - 2019-03-13

I voted this up strictly for the part where they shit all over Milwaukee! FUCK YOU MILWAUKEE!

Xenocide - 2019-03-13

Just wait until the movie sequel, "Captain Marvel Blows Up Milwaukee For No Reason."

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-13

1/3 movie review, 1/3 screed against manufactured outrage, 1/3 backhanded Milwaukee tourism video. I do believe this is one of their best.

Nominal - 2019-03-14

If Thanos had set out to wipe out Harley owners, no one would have tried to stop him.

cognitivedissonance - 2019-03-13

Weird, I didn’t see any politics in this movie.

SolRo - 2019-03-13

Disney wouldn’t do politics in a movie aside from condemning a literal evil caricature for being evil. Anything else done so vaguely so that no one can get offended unless they try really hard.

But to a lot of people on the internet a woman playing a fictional superhero is political, because a lot of people are dumb.

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-13

My friends who saw it opening night said the shallow pandering to feminism seemed like an obnoxious attempt to distract from dull characterization and bad structure.

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-13

I'll still stream it sometime, for the sake of completionism. The MCU has its hooks in me deep.

il fiore bel - 2019-03-13

Your friends sound exhausting.

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-13

Nah, they cool + smart.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-17

>>>My friends who saw it opening night said the shallow pandering to feminism seemed like an obnoxious attempt to distract from dull characterization and bad structure.

Okay, my question is: if the supposed "pandering to feminism" was, in fact, honest and insightful, that would at very least bring the characterization into a different light. So I can't evaluate your friends' opinion without a sense of their understanding of feminism.

Actually, after I see the movie, II might agree. I learned a lot about feminism from the much-maligned 2016 Ghostbusters remake. It's great fun to have a powerful, iconic female hero flying around and kicking ass. It defies stereotypes. There's nothing wrong with it, but the beauty of the 2016 Ghostbusters was that it neither trivialized nor romanticized women, and I came to realize how rare that is. If I may mansplain for just a moment, what feminism needs to communicate, at least some of the time, is that being a woman is no big deal. It's the ordinary, mundane circumstances of a majority of humans. Before they saved the world, the Lady Ghostbusters struggled with mean bosses, uncomfortable shoes, dickish boyfriends, the smell of urine, and trying to get the neighborhood Chinese restaurant to deliver a decent order of soup. This is the kind of reality that "Wonder Woman" lacked.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-18

>>>Disney wouldn’t do politics in a movie aside from condemning a literal evil caricature for being evil.

No no no wrong wrong wrong. The MCU movies are often extremely political, but they are removed enough from the real world that they can be unusually thoughtful and even-handed about it. Thanos is very explicit about how this

There's no reason to believe that Thanos killing half the population at random would actually solve our problems, but what if it could? It's sort of the Trolley problem on a global scale. Right now, we're looking down the barrel of a global environmental disaster forced by the very wealthy and powerful, which will very likely have devastating consequences for all humanity except for the very wealthy and powerful. I didn't see Al Gore's movie, so I can honestly say I've never seen anything that so clearly evokes this massive global crime, something that may come to dwarf the holocaust. Thanos very explicitly talks about the justice of everybody paying equally, and it's pretty compelling. And it's utterly political.

Captain America: Civil War is all about a political conflict over the power of an individual vs. the power of government, in which both sides are well-represented. Black Panther is about a political conflict about the responsibility of Wakanda to the rest of the world, or perhaps to the part of the world that is black. The Winter Soldier is about a government conspiracy, and the dangers of information technology. Iron Man is about the moral evolution of an arms dealer.

It's not partisan, but it is political. And it's certainly not "condemning a literal evil caricature for being evil". Honestly, the level of regard for the humanity of both sides in a deadly conflict that you often find in the MCU reminds me of nothing so much as Homer's Iliad. Or maybe the "Balance of Terror" episode of Star Trek TOS.

Gmork - 2019-03-13

Some one-starring people with shitty taste. Wonderful.

Caminante Nocturno - 2019-03-14

Milwaukee sounds like a magical place.

BHWW - 2019-03-15

Half in the Bag is good because people keep stamping their feet over how toxic they are for not enjoying PRODUCT.

Just one example, some Youtuber who does boring reviews of indie games and moans a lot over how problematic they are:

"*new Best of the Worst comes out* Oh man I can't wait to see the guys half-lovingly riff on some terrible z-grade schlock this is great stuff

*new Half in the Bag about a woman-lead superhero film where Mike is making a mocking face in the thumbnail* ...Yeah I'ma skip this"

and

"I can't tell if Mike is being edgy or if he's actually that much of a misogynist but it's so unbearable"

"I mean, they have at this point taken an average (Captain Marvel), less-than-good (Ghostbusters), and good-to-great (Last Jedi) female-lead nerd property film and insisted they are somehow Profoundly Legendarily Bad, so I don't know what other conclusion to reach."

Isn't Stoklasa making a dumb face in EVERY RLM thumbnail?

From the way they're reacting, you'd think these people never watched an Half in the Bag video before and now there's a slight divergence from their acceptable opinions it's cry-cry-time.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-03-15

Don't make fun of movies on your channel where you make fun of movies!

Two Jar Slave - 2019-03-15

Captain Marvel got Mike's recommendation.

BHWW - 2019-03-15

He recommended it but it was a lukewarm recommendation and that was enough to set people off. People fully into the cycle of nerd consumerism getting indignant and replying to it with their own, totally serious unironic version of "don't ask questions just consume product and get excited for more product".

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-17

I stopped watching them years ago. I can't remember why. Maybe it had something to do with Ghostbustergate.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-17

"Don't ask questions just consume product and get excited for more product."

That's my approach to the MCU, and it has served me.well. Your mileage may vary. The fact is, being critical of product can be another way of enjoying product, and I respect that. If you don't enjoy it. what's the point?

Last night, I went to see ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. For reasons that are not the movie's fault, I kept dozing off, and the story got away from me, but I very much enjoyed the effects and action sequences. Sue me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-03-17

>>>From the way they're reacting, you'd think these people never watched an Half in the Bag video before and now there's a slight divergence from their acceptable opinions it's cry-cry-time.

I don't think "cry-cry time" describes the opinions you've quoted here. I see criticism and disagreement, calmly expressed.

They may be wrong. There's no doubt that there was a huge backlash against this movie before it ever came out, and taken as a whole, this backlash looked like misogyny. And maybe in the context of these events, people were confused about RLM's intent. If liberals think your MAGA hat is racist, maybe you should consider distancing yourself from the tiki-torch wielding bastards who wore them at Charlottesville.
