Yes, a brand new character...who first appeared in the comics in 1968. And who's had those Superman-level powers since the mid-70's and has been a consistent presence at Marvel ever since.

I think the point is that she's been retconned into THIS series, the Disney Marvel franchise, as a superpowered diety that has been around and is integral to the plot but that we never see and nobody ever mentions.

Nominal specifically called her a brand new character, which she's not. And it's a bit late to be complaining about retcons in the MCU now given that they've been shoving those in since at least the first Avengers movie. Hell, the entire plot of Winter Soldier is a retcon and that's Marvel's best movie. It's no big deal.

I think they really hit the nail on the head when they described the problem with this movie as a lack of decision regarding what direction to take the character. I wish they had spent more time with the writing and rounded her character out better rather than tried to use feminism and girl power to make up for a lack of effort. They have gone to such great lengths with most of the MCU so it's weird that they just sort of stopped short with this movie.

It's like they were afraid to give her character too much character. As if they needed to have a strong female lead so badly they couldn't trust that a strong female character could have a well rounded personality or overall story arch.

I don't understand why anyone downvoted this. This is really well done for Half in the Bag and they called out the equal mundanity of much of the response of the internet along with Bree Larson's vacuous comments as both being problematic. These guys are not political and they are really very fair in every movie review I've ever seen them do, to the point where I respect them more than most movie critics.

I stopped reading comics after the cover price hit a dollar and Carol Danvers is unfamiliar to me. What I know from the trailer, and from the post credit scene from Infinity Wars, is that she is involved with Nick Fury.and SHIELD, so it makes sense that no one has been talking about her. Fury is no chatty Cathy.

Am I excited? Optimistic. I can only think of a handful of MCU movies that didn't just blow me away, and they were all pre AVENGERS.

Okay, my question is: if the supposed "pandering to feminism" was, in fact, honest and insightful, that would at very least bring the characterization into a different light. So I can't evaluate your friends' opinion without a sense of their understanding of feminism.

Actually, after I see the movie, II might agree. I learned a lot about feminism from the much-maligned 2016 Ghostbusters remake. It's great fun to have a powerful, iconic female hero flying around and kicking ass. It defies stereotypes. There's nothing wrong with it, but the beauty of the 2016 Ghostbusters was that it neither trivialized nor romanticized women, and I came to realize how rare that is. If I may mansplain for just a moment, what feminism needs to communicate, at least some of the time, is that being a woman is no big deal. It's the ordinary, mundane circumstances of a majority of humans. Before they saved the world, the Lady Ghostbusters struggled with mean bosses, uncomfortable shoes, dickish boyfriends, the smell of urine, and trying to get the neighborhood Chinese restaurant to deliver a decent order of soup. This is the kind of reality that "Wonder Woman" lacked.

There's no reason to believe that Thanos killing half the population at random would actually solve our problems, but what if it could? It's sort of the Trolley problem on a global scale. Right now, we're looking down the barrel of a global environmental disaster forced by the very wealthy and powerful, which will very likely have devastating consequences for all humanity except for the very wealthy and powerful. I didn't see Al Gore's movie, so I can honestly say I've never seen anything that so clearly evokes this massive global crime, something that may come to dwarf the holocaust. Thanos very explicitly talks about the justice of everybody paying equally, and it's pretty compelling. And it's utterly political.

Captain America: Civil War is all about a political conflict over the power of an individual vs. the power of government, in which both sides are well-represented. Black Panther is about a political conflict about the responsibility of Wakanda to the rest of the world, or perhaps to the part of the world that is black. The Winter Soldier is about a government conspiracy, and the dangers of information technology. Iron Man is about the moral evolution of an arms dealer.

It's not partisan, but it is political. And it's certainly not "condemning a literal evil caricature for being evil". Honestly, the level of regard for the humanity of both sides in a deadly conflict that you often find in the MCU reminds me of nothing so much as Homer's Iliad. Or maybe the "Balance of Terror" episode of Star Trek TOS.

He recommended it but it was a lukewarm recommendation and that was enough to set people off. People fully into the cycle of nerd consumerism getting indignant and replying to it with their own, totally serious unironic version of "don't ask questions just consume product and get excited for more product".

I stopped watching them years ago. I can't remember why. Maybe it had something to do with Ghostbustergate.

Last night, I went to see ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. For reasons that are not the movie's fault, I kept dozing off, and the story got away from me, but I very much enjoyed the effects and action sequences. Sue me.

They may be wrong. There's no doubt that there was a huge backlash against this movie before it ever came out, and taken as a whole, this backlash looked like misogyny. And maybe in the context of these events, people were confused about RLM's intent. If liberals think your MAGA hat is racist, maybe you should consider distancing yourself from the tiki-torch wielding bastards who wore them at Charlottesville.
