I care but I don't know why.

Something about how you move slightly faster when shot from certain directions. He fires the pistol once in the building to affect the random number generator for the monster layout in the next rooms, to get exactly the right setup to be hit for maximum speed and to not get blocked. Backing up before each door is to build up to max run speed to hit the door at the exact moment it's raised enough to pass through.

+ Constantly using that SR50 technique, where you can get a 10% speed boost above normal strafe running, but u have to hold down 4 keys + u cant turn at all when doing it.
+ Luck is such a huge factor in getting through that main room, that they tried it tens of thousands of times to get this run.

What if you played a game about killing Nazis but didn't like, kill any Nazis?

Then you'd be speedrunning Wolfenstein.

Doom had the demons and undead Space Marines.

Oh, right. But I think the developers did hide a few swastikas in some of the maps to hint at a little backstory.

Presumably some of the nazis killed by Wolfenstein guy went to hell, and subsequently were released onto Mars to be further killed by Doom guy

The only swastika I know of was in E1M4 or something in the first shareware version, they took it out of every commercial release I've seen.

I might still have a shareware floppy release, I definitely remember seeing the swastika when I first played through Doom Shareware on a 486 laptop my dad borrowed from work (we had a 386 that wouldn't run Doom) and was pretty surprised after playing a lot of the full release at a friend's house and never seeing the swastika.
