In the late 90's I was on my back porch smoking a cig and saw something like this happen during a somewhat intense meteor shower. I told everyone I knew about it, and no one else saw it or even acknowledged that there was a meteor shower the night before.
In the mid-aughts I saw something like that while driving up I-5 from Portland to Seattle on July 4th. At first I thought it was part of the fireworks, but it obviously wasn't!
also one time in high school i was sitting with my girlfriend and a shooting star made a sizzling noise over us, never seen anything quite so brilliant
My friend Zach and I were both 8 years old and sitting on the hood of his parent's car with our backs on the windshield. The sun had just set, but there was plenty of light left. Suddenly, a gigantic rock that seemed to be the size of a mountain tumbled through the sky right over us. It looked like it was twirling in slow motion, with fire trailing different parts of its uneven surface. We watched it skip through the atmosphere and disappear over the horizon. Our parents didn't believe us or wouldn't accept the magnitude of the thing.
Memory is a tricky thing, but I'm still convinced decades later that what I saw was a near-miss with a world-ender.
