He's kind of an odd bird. I agree that when he tries to be funny on this show, it tends to be kinda cringeworthy. But I consider that the price of admission to a well researched long-form of journalism.
And his work on the daily show shows that he can be very, very funny. I'm guessing that the strain of trying to ham-handedly force jokes into these grim pieces is what's causing the non-funny.
he's a smart pickpocket from england who can't believe what a shitshow this country and planet is and he is doing everything he can to help raise our awareness of many under-discussed issues.
he's no hero, he's just very helpful.
he makes me smirk at best.
all that said, I have watched every single episode of this show.
