Thanks Obama

Louie Anderson, no!

Just once, whenever someone says "I have black friends", I'd love to see someone immediately ask them what their names are.

To a racist, being polite to a black coworker and them being polite to them = ‘I have black friends’

TeenerTot - 2019-07-27

"My postman is black" = "I have black friends."

Rosebeekee - 2019-07-27

I imagine it would either be a lot of sputtering, or a short pause before they say a bunch of obviously fake, stereotypical names.

Somone actually put this clip on the news in Ralieigh. As a youTube video, this is interesting, but is it really NEWS?
What are the odds that neither of these white North Carolina news anchors have never used the N word in an offensive way?

Okay, terrble behavior. Obviously. But is this kind of fetishistic public shaming really going to bring about the self-examination that has obviously been too long delayed?

i know this sounds weird, but maybe we need to stop stigmatizing racism. Yeah, I know, hear me out.

Maybe the lady had black friends. Maybe her husband is black. Who cares? Why does it matter? If an old lady says something despicable in a public place, why isn't the issue her despicable behavior? Why do we have to comb through her whole biography and judge her whole character? Why can't it just be about the despicable thing she said?

The citizens of Raleigh are going to turn this woman into a public villain, at least partly in order to keep the secret that most of them have said or done worse. Everyone gets turned one more degree away from self examination.

When white people talk about how they're the real victims of racism, that's obviously a SERIOUS lack of empathy and perspective. Being called a racist is not the worst injustice ever, but I can see where it's pretty frightening and upsetting, even if much of the time, it's totally true.

People should be able to say out loud: "I'm sort of racist sometimes. It's not right, and I need to work on it."
