"The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019, and be released digitally on Netflix in late 2019."

TIFF screenings can be fun. I saw Top Five in a 2,000 seat theatre full of laughing, screaming fans.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-17

This ain't no joke?
Consider me stoked.

Rated R!

No need to worry about whether this is Bullshit. Every biopic ever made is Bullshit. This could turn out to be entertaining. I noticed the same screenwriters as Ed Wood are credited, so that's a good sign.

No matter what, this is mainstream recognition for Rudy Ray Moore, and I believe he deserves it.

Space Odin - 2019-08-17

Yeah, my only real concern is that to me, Eddie Murphy is so distinctive that he feels artificially separated from Rudy (listen to the timbre of both their voices).

But on the other hand, fuck it. Dude was an uncrowned legend and if this makes five more people want to check out Petey Wheatstraw, it is a force for good.

Plus, keep giving Wesley Snipes a paycheck. That man needs cash.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-17

I've said this before, probably in the streamdumpster MNR. Rudy Ray Moore had one of the best speaking voices of all time. That voice was his one natural gift. He wasn't particularly handsome, or a good actor, and he sure as hell didn't know Kung Fu. But he had the voice, like a mentholated buzzsaw. Everything else was pure hustle.

I think Murphy's best move is to not to try too hard to replicate what no one can replicate. Remember Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote? That's the only time I can think of when doing an impression and acting at the same time really worked.

Eddie Murphy has made a lot of bad movies, but he's a good actor. I'd rather see him play Rudy Ray Moore as a character than give an overly mannered, restrained performance that's no fun. I bet Rudy would agree.

And again, EVERY biopic is bullshit. "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" was pretty good , but there probably wasn't a food fight at Doug Kenney's funeral. We were supposed to believe that the license taken was a tribute to Doug Kenney's irrevrent humor, but the truth is that it was to fit into the conventions of the genre and not end the story of a 34 year suicide on a downer.

MadTv's Dolemite skits were pretty good. Aries Spears did a good job with the voice

Old_Zircon - 2019-08-19

Odin, at worst it'll still be a lot better than Man on the Moon in that regard.

Jim Carrey's performance in that is like the Platonic form of "all technique, no soul" - it was like watching a robot do the broom dance from Breakin' or the gymnasium dance from Royal Wedding.

The Mothership - 2019-08-18

This is just crazy enough to work.

boner - 2019-08-18

Why doesn’t the trailer just say “Watch this good shit”?

snothouse - 2019-08-18

(Woman tearfully expresses how she's thrilled to be seeing "someone like her" on the big screen)
COMING SOON TO STREAMING

Caminante Nocturno - 2019-08-20

It's good that Eddie Murphy is getting work.

exy - 2019-11-01

Watched the movie last night and I thought it was pretty good

Nominal - 2020-06-15

Watched the movie last night and it made me just want to watch Dolemite instead.

The end credits show the actual Dolemite clips that Eddie reenacted, and RRM did the material so much better that it's almost an admission that a recreation is pointless. So why bother?

The only redeeming quality was Arsenio Hall as the wits end director.
