Erik should be paying me royalties for the use of my body.

Boomer The Dog - 2019-10-03

I think I get it, that puppy at the end will be his jogging partner to help lose weight.

He looks like a Border Collie, a high energy breed.

Gmork - 2019-10-03

Hey, he's tackling one of PoeTV's blind spots. Being shitty to people based on their body. In that respect lots of y'all are stuck in middle school mentality.

I will agree with you.

Some of my best friends are fat and they're just regular people, like me (fat).

Old_Zircon - 2019-10-03

I've been pretty conscious about body shaming since before FCIPH even existed, but I still reserve my right to point out that Sarah Huckabee Sanders looks like someone squeezed the forceps too hard when she was born.

now you're just picking on the facially challenged.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2019-10-04

Eh
Being fat is (unless in very very rare medical cases) the result of your own decisions: Lack of volition, discipline, or even noticing the problem. Theres also tonnes of data supporting how unhealthy it is.

Therefore, it's not like being born with some disease, or a super ugly face or something. Something over which you have no control.

I would say its like being a drug addict. Your self indulgence and lack of discipline or whatever are causing you health problems and are making you more likely to be less useful and more of a burden on society.

Of course using 'you fat bastard' as part of an argument is a logical fallacy: ad hominem so its equivalent to no argument.

Also fat-shaming is probably not a good idea. Shaming someone, lowering their self esteem and whatnot is probably not going to help them address their problems productively. Its probably gonna do the opposite.

Like drug addiction, it's not a moral failure on the part of the individual, it's a societal failure for not supporting people.

Walking and cycling for transportation is the simplest easiest way to gradually get people healthy, but our cities are planned to make that pretty much impossible for most people.

Eating healthy food that you cook at home (and thus control the salt, fat, portions) is also a very simple way to moderate or at least be aware of the things you eat. Unfortunately precarious work, food deserts, and lack of basic cooking skills makes that difficult for a lot of people.

Gmork - 2019-10-05

There's also "tonnes" of data indicating black people are more likely to commit crimes, but that's ignoring the systems in place that gather that data. Not exactly a good argument.

Doctors will tell you that all of your problems are caused by being overweight and many will ignore real and serious conditions that anyone could get in favor of blowing it off over visible adipose.

You're talking about visible adipose, not bad health. Being visibly fat is not an indicator of anything other than you have fat deposits on your body. It says nothing about your blood pressure, and isn't intrinsically linked to poor health.

You're conflating causes and symptoms. Someone who has unhealthy habits is more likely to be fat. The assumption that fat = unhealthy is something only the truly stupid do. I could go into exhaustive detail about all this but the internet has taught me people generally just double down on their presumptions the moment they're questioned, so you can go on believing whatever dumb shit about fat people you want.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2019-10-05

@Gmork

Nope. Do you know what statistical analysis is? Its a tool, like the scientific method for example, to get useful conclusions from data.

Now, its hard to do, and it can often be done badly. But it is pretty crucial within medicine. When I say there is a tonne of data I mean there really is an awful lot, probably more than there is linking smoking with cancer.
Some studies and analyses might be garbage, but its highly unlikely that this is not a minority.
What they say is that being overweight or obese is very strongly connected with various health issues.
You could be really fat and also completely healthy, or vice versa, but that is *not* likely.
If you have two pairs of 1 million identical twins, with identical lives; one group becomes overweight or obese, and the other group not.. The fat group will overall be much less healthy, will die earlier etc.
If you deny this, you are denying some extremely well supported science. Unless u happen to have a magical cache of supporting evidence, properly statistically analysed, then you may as well be a flat-earther.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2019-10-05

@Gmork
I'm *not* talking about visible adipose. I'm just talking about fat.. So Subcutaneous Fat, Visceral Fat, Intramuscular Fat, Brown Fat.

You body stores your fat around your body in a certain ratio. So theres certainly some lucky bastards who just genetically have high ratios of the less harmful brown fat and subcutaneous fat.
But most people are going to have the average ratio of subcutaneous fat to visceral fat.

Maybe one happens to be one of those lucky bastards, in which case go crazy! consume and grow larger!
But that's a bit like saying hey if you win the lottery make loads of frivolous purchases, buy a ferrari.

This episode was basically fan service for me.
