I thought the yellow one (alien 3) was really good. The only reason I'd say its not as good as the 1st one is that its obviously less original. What do people think is wrong with it??

All the characters are just a bunch of tropes. The dialogue is shit. I hate them for killing Newt in the setup, but if she had lived probably one of the prisoners would have raped her. It's that kind of movie.

I dont understand how u can say that about Alien 3, but *not* think the same about Alien and Aliens. They're about the same imo. The alien series is 'not Shakespeare' (as they say)

I've looked at the criticism on imdb, and its mostly similar to yours; criticising things that are very similar in the 1st two films, or criticising things that are good! (eg. the cinematography)

My theory is that people just dont like it cus its bleak and drab and depressing, and they hand-wave various other reasons why its bad.

???????? Alien has excellent dialogue and performances. Aliens has ... memorable lines.

imho the only good ones are Alien and Aliens. 3+ are where it turned into a "franchise", which you can tell because that's when the plastic toys and spin-off merch was produced.

Resurrection was the last Aliens movie I watched; I thought it was utter trash.

Later I was proven right when I found out that Joss Whedon was involved.

Alright I was wrong, I didn't do any research before posting that.

I do remember the Aliens-3-based toys being heavily marketed to my cohort when I was in school. They had the different kinds of aliens like gorilla and dog and stuff. There was also the Aliens trading card game that probably came out when Magic: The Gathering got popular.

I think that level of intense merchandising is different than the Alien toy whose ad SolRo linked. The one in the link looks like the kind of spin-off product that was done entirely independently by a toy company and the owner of the Aliens brand just ok'ed it - they didn't really make it a part of the whole strategy. By the time Aliens 3 came out, the toys were probably part of the plan for the movie from the beginning.
