America is full of mean-spirited cruel people. Petty, spiteful people. Their sense of decency cannot be appealed to. Their sense of shame cannot be appealed to. This is why Americans don't have the greatest reputation as tourists in other countries.
The 30% asshole Americans ruin it for the 70% non-asshole Americans.
Overwhelmingly most Americans are too poor to travel to Europe, the tourists giving us a bad reputation are from the UK. Credit to Doug Stanhope for recognizing this.
The Huns were actually treated as either slaves or second class citizens and disposable to the Roman military more than other peoples due to their prior history of conflict. Many Huns had been absorbed into the Empire but not treated with respect and in many places even Huns with some influence and power were pretty much treated like dirt. They were often met with suspicion wherever they went, treated like barbarians even though they were noble, productive citizens most of the time.
The Huns at one point were desperate to escape their homeland because it had been invaded by some other asshole barbarians, and the Romans were against a mass migration of Huns. They put them into camps and told them the men would be allowed to join the Roman army but they were against integrating them into the larger populace at first.
There are parallels between the Huns and the modern day Mexico/US border.
I mean that was centuries before Attila but whatever. In a few hundred years they'll have commercials where Trump is dressed as Napoleon (as he fights lizard people) and no one will know the difference between the two of them and most will have no notion of who either of those people are.
I mean Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan were two of the most psychotic people who ever lived but that doesn't really register with most people.
